In 2004 the Republicans could still put on a plausible show that their policies weren't complete horseshit. THere might have still been WMDs to be found, the war might have turned around any day, the economy was still going good, Bush hadn't hit all time records for national debt, etc, etc.

Don't get me wrong, anybody with half a brain could see that most of what the Republicans were saying would happen wasn't going to happen, and that most of the negative predictions that were made did indeed happen, I'm just saying, back then dumb people could have a bit of faith that things would turn out well, as well as ignoring the relatively small amount of negative press.
