If he shows up to 'help' and the crisis is solved, he will obviously get some kind of praise.
Obama didn't say he wouldn't help, but he feels the debate should still happen as Presidents need to be able to handle more then one thing at a time.
I see it as ducking, and a lame move. Paulson and Bernanke don't need presidential politics thrown into the ring when trying to work on a bailout package

I do get great service there, especially when I mention my name, haha.
he CAN'T help, he even admitted the economy is his weak point.
matt damon had it right, if this wasn't reality it would be hilarious

It's all fluff. He pulled the same stunt earlier in the campaign with the energy crisis and vowing to go back to Washington to deal with it. Obama is right on the money here. Election is in November... yeah, lets stop everything and run to Washington.
He needs diversion.
Palin is shot. His comments from last 10 days make him look like an idiot. Even Republicans are dissing his lies and tactics.
He need the attentions focused elsewhere.
like no one saw this coming...

I've decided if the Rep's win the election I am moving far away from North America... preferably somewhere that isn't downwind from the nuclear fall-out.
^ Everyone always says that, nobody ever follows their words. The Economy is looking screwed either way, this current administration has messed everything up so bad it's unbelievable.

Well just to play Devil's advocate here, why shouldn't McCain and Obama show up to the Senate? AFAIK, they're still serving senators, they should be still held to their Senatorial duty.

what can mccain do as a senator? a week ago he though the foundation of the economy was fine, which really speaks to his competency on the subject. as per obama, i would say he gave reason enough...Originally posted by Eleanor

It's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess, it's going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once

^ McCain & Obama could be in Congress, listening to and involving themselves with the debates. Isn't that what the American taxpayers pay them for? I don't see why they can't go to Washington and express their opinions on the matter.

i don't see why they can't do that while campaigning, i would expect a president to handle more than one task at a time, no?Originally posted by Eleanor

I agree, they should be able to handle more than one task at a time. But out of curiosity, how many times have McCain or Obama been on the floor in Congress over the past year?
I don't think they should cancel the debate, don't get me wrong. But at the same time, they should be performing their Senatorial duties. Shouldn't they be able to multi-task?
