<personal info deleted for privacy concerns from insurance company>

He hit my car back in July. He pulled out of a parallel spot on a residential street and drove into my rear passenger quarter-panel while I was going maybe 30kph. I don't even know how such a mistake can be made unless he was stoned out of his mind. It's not like I was in his blind spot; 3/4 of my car had already driven past him.

Well being the rookie accident-recipient that I am, I took down all his info EXCEPT for who his insurance provider is (I did get the policy # though). I told him I'd call him and we'd figure out the details as I thought he'd likely want to go outside of insurance.

I tried calling him a few days later, left a message, but nothing. Tried a few times later but no answer and no message returned.

So I figured since I had tried to do the nice thing and go outside of insurance and he was dodging me, then I might as well give my insurance company a call.

Well apparently even though I have his name, phone number, and plate number, my insurance company (Meloche Monnex) says there's not much they can do. They've sent registered letters to his address but he obviously hasn't accepted them.

I could honestly care less about the damage to my car as it's still drivable and it's a POS anyway, but it's just the frickin' principle. I'm simply pissed about two things:

1) That morally bankrupt people can get away with shit like this.

2) That my insurance company is useless. I can't fathom how they can have a name, phone number, and plate and yet have no way of finding who Danny's insurance policy is with. Although if this never gets resolved I'll chalk this up to a learning experience since I should have paid more attention when getting his info.

Yep that looks like him. I don't know how contacting him through FB would help though as he doesn't respond to phone calls or letters.

How do you know if it's under $1K? I mean, unless you took it to a repair shop and they removed all the parts and quoted you under $1K. What about the other guy?

Anyways, you should just tell the cop that it is over $1K so they can track him down for you. How are you supposed to be an expert at estimating accidents.

Don't guess, you're not an autobody appraiser. Some shops charge more than others... you'd be surprised how much repairs are. Also I believe the $1000 is for total damage to all parties involved, not just your vehicle.

I wouldn't even both with an estimate, just tell the cop you "think" it's over $1K.

That's easy, just call the 6-7 major insurance companies and ask them if the policy number is correct.

and get one from at least 3 places, 2 of them should be reputable (i.e: Eurocraft or A-1)

you can file a police report either way, as long as you have his info. (as said above). You'll need it if you are going through insurance, they'll ask for the case number. Also ask them if you can report a hit and run, then they "should" hunt him down for you.
