Why is Downtown Calgary out of alignment? quote:

Physically in terms of the rest of Calgary's road grid, why is there a slight tilt with the avenues and streets downtown?

I've been wondering this for years and searched Google with no prevail. Just seeing if anyone on beyond can shed some light on this.

I'll Google search from that, as a lifelong Calgarian I was always curious.

Did you notice that the roads slant horizontally as well?

They are perfectly horizontal, the slant just a matter of your perspective.

But I'm guessing that either:

A) Survey techniques at the time meant they didn't get the roads perfectly parallel with with East-West; Or

B) The influence of the river.

No prevail??

Just a stab in the dark here, but which way from true north is magnetic north? Could it be that the roads were designed at a time when magnetic north was accepted as true north?

Better theory than a drunk architect, but let's not forget, the first road in Calgary had to come from _somebody_, and he could have been drunk, although you would think that the next sober person would notice this.

I read a book about the beginning of Calgary. What a fucking gong show it was. Calgary Cavalcade by Grant MacEwan. Its not in print, but Im sure there is a copy on Ebay or some where, used book shop or something.

But as I understand it the roads slant because they are parallel with the rail line

This could be solved with a quick google search but i'll googletard it and ask here....Where did Calgary start and when did downtown, as we know it today, get started?

Calgary used to be an outpost for the NWMP (RCMP)
