Its an on-going debacle that still services as media hype. Winnipeg is such as bureaucratic town with people far too sensitive for any good reason.
This is absolute crap, but its not the first time a circumstance like this has occurred.
I think about a year ago, an article was released by the Sun press reflecting how this "poor" native american man down on his luck got his ass handed to him when he tried to hold up a gas station with a knife. Of course the media took a spin on how the city was hard on the indegunious people, having to live through extreme oppressions and all.
I call bullshit! Though rare, I know examples of successful contributing members of our society who happen to be aboriginal.
Its the "underdog" sympathizers that truly cause such controversy.
In Winnipeg, racial slurs against the Native Americans are as common as they come, but their reputation of them being inbread FAS walking wastes of skin never goes unconfirmed.
To me, and likely to the entire Jewish population in Winnipeg, take offense to comment, or Media endorsement that made in any reference to "hate crimes" that they have ever had to endure.
I grew up in Winnipeg, in a nice suburban area, which our Mayor in the earlier 90's, I think Susan Thompson and a deputy mayor who was Metis, had a great idea to assimilate the displaced natives in the City and to invite more aborigines from neighboring reserves.
This program, called Manitoba Housing, rented from slumlords across the city, ranging from downtown to even the far ends of suburbia, such my area, providing "low income" housing.
The result? Crime, property value plummeted as these "people" further confirmed their stereotypes
Break ins, thefts, rape, molestation just to name a few.
I remember going to my high school class, walking with a buddy, and there was Jonny Runningwater huffing away at some lysol in the baseball diamond next door.
As we walk by, he yells out; f' you whitebread'... meanwhile I'm as Asian as can be.
Next thing you know, I'm working his face with my knee until the buzzer goes and he's leaking everywhere.
Lunch time, I go outside and have a smoke.
There's Jonny who missed classes, comes up to me ask says: hey maaan bum me a smoke buddy? not even able to remember the beating I gave him a couple hours earlier.
Now getting back to the rare circumstances that you see the few examples make it through, living what we would deem a conventional lifestyle.
Well in their culture it takes balls to take initiative.
My friend, an RCMP officer in blood vein MB, had to investigate a murder.
This one aspiring person, who recently graduated high-school, who never served a criminal sentence, was slated to go to University of Manitoba on a scholarship (well not like they need one). During his graduation party, two of his brothers stabbed him to death, purely out of jealousy.
No witnesses ever came forward, and the Chief "condoned" the attacks as possibly self defense, not allowing for further investigation... and nothing happened
Even the Chief was in common belief that their right to passage/Manhood is not through education, but rather to serve hard time.
So those few exceptional aborigines who defied their own tribe/family had to endure a ridiculous amount of hardship just to make it past their own people's expectations.
I knew something like this was going to come up the second the OP was made.
I asked the question amongst a few people the other day, Why do natives still have all the rights and privileges that they do nothing but waste/take advantage of?
I've yet to find an answer.
Why are they given money/special treatment time after time while doing nothing but wasting it and being a menace to the rest of society.
I don't doubt that they're capable of better, but of course they're not gonna try when they don't have to.
Also, I know they don't all follow the stereotype, but personally, I've yet to meet one that didn't.
Take my post how you want to..
