Default Can this wireless home sub/amp be repaired?

Boston Acoustic TVee 25 soundbar with wireless subwoofer belongs to my buddy. One day it started making this awful sound all the time. Adjusting the volume does nothing, tried all 4 wireless channels, different inputs, different houses. It was never driven hard and is about 2 years old. Any ideas how I can figure out what broke so I can see if it's worth fixing? Soundbar works fine still.

Well anything can be repaired with enough effort. The first step would be to take it apart and inspect the PCB for missing smoke then inspect the speakers and driver coils.

Sounds to me like one of the filtering circuits failed but i'm no expert.

I did disassemble everything and inspect all components, nothing obvious there unfortunately.

Should be a relatively easy and cheap fix, like jacky said, likely a bad filter component.

I had a car sub do something similar - I just took another board from another sub and bypassed the bad one in the car (the broken Sub was a custom mounted unit, otherwise I would have replaced the whole thing).

Has worked fine the last 5 years.

The next step is to meter everything. Check all the resistors and caps are the correct values. Then you get into inspecting various IC.

Have you tried this unit from a different power source? There is a small chance this is being caused by a local motor or compressor. Take it to a friends house or work.

^Yep, buddy had the problem with it at his house, and it's the exact same thing at my house. Metering it is then, once I remember how, haven't done that since SAIT almost 20 years ago, heh, google will retrain me. Thx mate

More than likely a bad/leaking mosfet transistor, what you're hearing is the frequency of the A/C voltage.

Maybe the power supply is hooped, if you can get the specs of the one in the sub, look for a replacement.

Shorted out resistors will cause this noise as well, as well as faulty noise choke circuits. but the fact that you're getting the noise amplified through the sub, make me lean more towards a voltage leaking through a mosfet.

They are not expensive to replace, or difficult to source, I use Digi Key for all my electrical component needs, from order to a package at my door is 3 days, and costs very little.

I went through all this when I had to fix the amp in my Touareg, it was popping, and giving out lots of distortion. $12 later it was better than new.
