Default Does it make sense to do this?

I'm trying to decide if I should keep my NAS, or sell it. I use it mainly for music and movies, and use Kodi 16.1 as the player.

What I do for the movies is, take my separate Blu-ray drive, and use MakeMKV to rip the movie. My computer is only so fast, so I only get 2x read ability. Then I transfer the movie onto the NAS.

I'm also a member of the Insider Hub for Xbox. One of the features that's coming is bitstreaming the lossless audio to your receiver, so your receiver does the audio work, not the Xbox. The sound is indistiguishable between the two devices.

The reason I ask, I recently lost all of my movies from the NAS. I had an audio glitch, and did a reset to factory, with one drive removed. I then tried to migrate from the full drive to the empty one, but didn't do it right. I'm starting to wonder if I even know what I'm doing with the NAS, enough to work it, or screw it up. If I were to sell the NAS, I would play discs in the Xbox, and have to go downstairs to get the movies, as the wife doesn't want them stored in the living room.

So I ask, is it worth it to re-rip 140 movies, takes about a month, or just move on, and stick with the Xbox?

I'd say, once, maybe twice a year. So, that's one against, any other opinions. Thanks Thaco.

140 movies, maybe once or twice each in a year? How many of those movies are available of off Netflix or movie channels if you subscribe to such with Shaw or TELUS? I am sitting here looking at our entertainment center and can honestly say that not a one of the 100+ DVD's in there have not been used in the last year - instead we use Netflix or a movie channel or whatever to watch them. Surely you can find something better to do with a month's worth of your spare time and save some monks at the same time. Please note that I may come off sounding like a bit of an ass but I'm not tryin to - technology is quickly erasing the need to have hard or soft copies of any media.

On the flip side, I went looking for some Kids In The Hall episodes and have not been successful yet in finding them, same goes for some old Clint Eastwood movies - some media just may very well be lost in this digital age.
    Will fuck off, again.

No, you don't sound like an ass. I just prefer a physical copy, don't know why, just do. I also like the lossless audio that you can't get from a streaming service. Is there a difference, I think there is, hence my preference.

What I'm really trying to decide between is, do I copy 140 or more movies to a HDD on a NAS to play vs. going downstairs, picking a movie, and using the Xbox to play the disc. You're statement of "surely you can find something better to do with a months's worth of your spare time" has me leaning towards ditching the NAS, and just playing the discs.

Re-rip them, it's very convenient to have everything in one spot.

I have a massive collection, accessible to be anywhere at home or abroad. I use Plex to organize my stuff, and Roku 3s all over the place, or just watch on laptop when away, or smart TV. Recently was in Fernie with friends and we were bored in the evening, the Airbnb place we stayed at had a smart tv, we installed the Plex app and had access to 1500 HD movies right there. It has it benefits.

I am not a fan of these prebuilt NAS devices so can't comment on them. I prefer to build my own servers that meet my needs better, and less risk of losing data.

I see what you're saying, but I can say, I've never been in a situation where I'd like to watch one of my movies remotely. It really was just to have all my movies in one place, and just use the remote to pick one.

I (personally) wouldn't bother with re-stuffing all of the DVDs into a NAS unless you live in a small condo and are planning on doffing the original, physical copies - like I did with my CD collection decades ago.

No, I'd keep the discs. I have mine in a big Rubbermaid bin right now. My wife is willing to give me the shelf space, I'm just gathering opinions right now. But I think my mind is made up.

What if you took all the BR disks and store them in a binder in the living room. It'll be much less of an eye-sore and take up less space. Keep all your boxes downstairs in the rubbermaid?

You could also just download the rips, there are the full disk rips which are 1:1 of the Blu-ray.

Don't know what your bandwidth limits are but 150x 60gB ish is 9000gB which is most likely over the limit for most people

I've sold it. The frustration of losing all that work, and having to do it again, I just can't bring myself to do it. It's going to another beyonder. Cheers, and thanks for all the opinions.
