I'm sort of banking on the fact that the market always seems to do the opposite of what people think it will. Last year everyone thought small caps would soar and thus everyone put most of their money in riskier stocks and ended up getting killed.

Now this year everyone is looking to more conservative stocks, I'm sticking to mostly small caps in hopes that the market will do the opposite again and reward the riskier stocks.

It's a gamble but I'm young and willing to take the risk, hopefully it pays off haha

What determines the top pick? The largest gain between the date of pick and the last trading day of the year? Or the largest gain within the year timeframe, regardless of stock price at year end? Or neither?

Last contest we did it as the highest gain at the end of the year, I'm sure whoever is keeping track of the stats this year could add in a highest gain throughout the year column or something.

If I weren't saving for a large house downpayment for this fall, I'd do the same. I'm hanging onto a bunch of penny stocks from last year in the hopes that they turn around, but any new positions I add will be low-risk.

For longer-term investments, most of the railroad companies are a safe bet. I actually think CP has more of an upside since it had a relatively bad 2011. However, my company just lost its contract with CP, so I've got to support the other guys.

That's 4, but that aside your picks interested me as I play a lot of oil & gas juniors and have owned WCP for a while despite it being slightly overvalued IMO now. From what I saw though, DTX has had some crappy luck with Alberta Bakken, and TOL's position isn't very impressive (Cardium is a play I don't invest in spare WCP cuz of how pricy the wells are and how fast they decline). Most of all though, I think you're gonna get killed on STO (the one I looked at closely). My estimate's $1.45/share current value if they met year end guidance, so you've paid $1.92 for upside. Their operated Bakken position sucks, so you're betting on one legacy Cardium pool. Stock's 60% hype, so as soon as management misses a target, investors here are gonna get eaten alive. I saw on Stockhouse that Raymond James raised the target to $6 on "upside"?? Insanity. I like my upside free. Just my thoughts.

Ever looked at REL.V? One of my picks. Dirt cheap and recovering from a couple years of suck and massive overvalue. Really interesting junior in the Manitoba Bakken play.

We had a really good first couple days of 2012, don't know if anyone reads the Globe & Mail or the Herald blogs...but if you search for Pershing Square you'll see some entertaining correspondence.

REL is one I hold in my portfolio as well. Thinking of picking up some more if it dips into the low 0.2's again.

Since I can't decide between Large Caps and Small Caps, I'm going to go with a Large, Mid, and Small this year...let's hope it's a good year for commodities!

    SU.TO
    ELD.TO
    RPT.V

(I may regret this...I had chosen WSX.V but decided to gamble on a penny stock insted).

I try to like them, but some of their operating practices I have seen in the field just makes me shake my head (ie. terribly unoptimized equipment, projects rolling way over budget, etc). Their decreasing dividend doesn't help
