It costs more to stop and start a train once than it does to move every single car it holds up all day.

how about all of the wasted revenue due to "30 minutes or free" delivery places?

also i fail to see that as an excuse since the majority of the time the train goes back and forth over the road ~10 times whenever im stuck during rush hour

You must be near inglewood, or near barlow (which is CN btw, not CP). That's building trains, down the main line we'll run trains at 10'000'+ long, but our yard tracks aren't that long, so the train gets built in two tracks, then doubled together before they depart, or they're coming in to yard and the opposite...putting away in to more than one track.

We think bigger. The majority of grain we transport is for export. We're helping solve world hunger.

Because of the stopping a train and starting a train thing... ~40 trains depart calgary in a day...that's one every 40 minutes leaving in one direction or another (the majority go east/west), there's no way for us to run a switching operation that only runs during non business hours, it's just not possible. The hump runs 24/7/365 and is NEVER out of traffic to work.

CN is building a huge train yard around the Conrich area, im guessing this will help eliminate some of train traffic in calgary.

Being an engineer is probably one of the most unpredictable careers that you can have. They're very well paid (they make significantly more than I do) but you very rarely hear of a running trades employee that has a really happy marriage.

Basically you're an on call employee, at any time you can get a call telling you that you have to be at work in two hours, you've got 12 hours to make it from your home terminal (in our case Calgary is a home terminal for crews going West to Field, and North to Red Deer, and an away from home terminal for crews based in Lethbridge and Brooks) to your away from home terminal, if you do it in under 10 you can turn back on a train and be on duty for up to a total of 18 hours. Or you can book up to 8 hours rest. At that point, there may be a train to go home on, or there may not, at which point you could end up hanging out in Red Deer for 18 hours.

    It's not a great lifestyle.

Its being built because we have ran out of room in Calgary. Its just not possible bringing in big 10,000ft + trains every day. Also, running big trains out of here isn't possible either. We are restricted to just 9300' out of Calgary, which just isn't enough.

From what they have told us, we will still have the yard in Calgary (barlow and 50th), so not all traffic will be gone right away. CN has big money customers in Calgary that we need to service. I guess this will eliminate some of the train traffic as we will only be bringing in 3000ft.

Ultimately though, CN runs absolutely nothing for trains out of Calgary. CN in Calgary is nothing compared to CP in Calgary.

CP runs 40, CN runs 4...

Engineering? Engineers aren't...well...engineers. Hehe, put it to you this way, a more experienced engineer can get the exact same train across the exact same track faster, and using less fuel as a less experienced engineer all without ever exceeding the same top speed. It's a very different skill set than anything else...train handling is a very complex thing with a lot of variables. A 10'000 ton train that's 7'000 ft long is going to handly completely differently than a train that is 4'000 tons and 7'000 ft long, or a train that's 10'000 tons and 4'000 ft long.
