Default BMW makes a GLA, and it looks Awesome - X2 Concept

    http://www.autoblog.com/2016/09/29/b...#slide-4079743

BMW has a consistent recipe to make a "coupe" out of one of its crossovers. You take the blocky version – an X5 or X3, say – and lop the back off. This leaves you with two models that look basically the same ahead of the rear doors. One version has more interior room and the other costs more and appeals to style-centric people who apparently have less stuff to haul around. If the Concept X2 is any indication (and we definitely think it is), that formula is about to change. Instead of simply taking an X1 and sticking a fastback hatch on it, BMW has reimagined its crossover coupe approach and in the process broken many of its design tenets. So this is doubly surprising, and it actually looks pretty good for a sporty little crossover. The biggest departure is the added width up front, or at least the illusion that the Concept X2 is wider than an X1. The face indeed recalls those of BMWs coupes, especially the 2-Series, and goes away from the X motif of past BMW crossover models (it's subtle, but look back at an X5 or X3 and you can make out some kind of X among the front-end details). This car instead goes for more of a mustachioed look with some very aggressive bumper sculpting. There are at least Xes in the headlights to tip you off, although the partial hexagons they sit within are a minor departure from the corona ring look of other modern (non-i) BMWs. Then there's the fact that the kidney grilles have been flipped upside down. BMW says this is to set the X2 apart from the rest of the BMW lineup. We're not quite sure why that's a good thing, since the general design is one of the brand's major stylistic hallmarks. They're still recognizable as kidneys at a glance, and Bimmerphiles won't be completely lost: In case you missed the Hofmeister kink, there's a BMW roundel right next to it. So yeah, it's a BMW. There are lots of other stylistic flourishes on this concept, including a black roof inset that tapers to a rounded conclusion at the rear. The back end is also completely unique to this design and shares little with the look of an X4 or X6. The side glass also tapers nearly to a point, emphasizing the thick rear fenders. The hatch keeps a pretty conventional shape and the car instead relies on that wide look, lots of body sculpting, and the details to differentiate itself from the X1. We expect a production X2 looking very much like this to arrive for 2018. Sharing with the X1 platform means a front-drive-based model with a turbocharged four-cylinder, and we wouldn't rule out a more powerful version for the coupe-ish version.

If a car actually came out looking anywhere close to this with an M Performance derived B58 I would be one of the first orders for this car. It looks exceptional imo and a huge departure from BMW's usual SUV formula. Which imho is a very good thing ( X4, X6 )

Small sporty BMW hatchback with a bit of extra clearance, me likey.

Trouble is the platform has gone 4-cyl transverse and FWD based which i have no idea how they could rectify. Same goes with the next 1 and 2 series. Hopefully they change their minds about that concept by the time this comes out.

Thank god that chopped trunk SUV to coupe conversion is gone. That was by far the laziest design I've ever seen with BMW. I mean really, at least change the front bumpers up or something haha.

As for the 4-cyl FWD based AWD, BMW just needs to up their game. There's no reason why a FWD AWD setup can drive as crappy as the latest X1. If the Focus RS can do it or arguably the Haldex based GLA45 can do it, BMW can too.

Agreed, it could be good. It just isn't. I would also have no problem with a really solid BMW 4 Cyl. But the new *30i engine doesn't cut the mustard for performance.

Yup, GLC is currently the ugliest car on the streets. This looks pretty good.

I don't think the GLC Coupe is out yet, and funny enough I think it's the best looking of the SUV coupes on the market today.

Whoops, I was thinking of the GLE. The side and front to 3/4 view looks pretty good, but the back profile and lighting is what I dislike along with the parabola window shape from the CLS. Looks like the GLC is about the same but smaller.

So what's the point of X1 now? X2's dimension doesn't look much different.

well shit. I'm impressed with the design, but I would still want 4 doors. I could make 2 work though lol.

I would hope that they would bring some sort of element of the old driving feel of the 14 and understand, but I'm thinking it's probably just going to be based off the same "new" X Series. sad.

I thought it was 2 as well but if you expand the picture you can see the rear door seams.

Yea its 4 doors, the concept just doesn't have visible door handles. If you click the pictures you can see the rear door outline.
