    Default Drop in rods 1.8T

    Looking to get some drop in rods installed on a 1.8T vw engine. What would be the standard hrs charged for this?

    Can anyone suggest someone who specializes in vw/Audi engine builds

    Are you asking for? A short block build, or for someone to repair and replace (engine swap).

    What part of the build are you looking to do yourself (if any)?

    Where are you machining your crank (if reused)?

    Typically you have your short block reassembled at the machine shop where your crank is milled/ground.

    D&W is a great machine shop if you stay on top of them.

    My last bill from them to mill a crank, press in new valve seats, deck my head and drill & tap a couple coolant passages with full long block assembly was 16hrs + parts. That also included blueprinting my head and a full P&P.

    You're looking at 8-10hrs for a short block build.

    Rod is pretty excellent to deal with.

    Just replacing the factory rods with upgraded IE ones.

    Is the engine out of the car on a stand?

    Are you supplying the rods yourself?

    Are the bearings to be supplied by you or the shop?

    is the crank machine surface true and ready for new bearings?

    Normally, shops do not like being supplied 3rd party parts and being told to install them. A shop can not verify the authenticity or integrity of these parts. Shops also warranty their builds if they supply parts; whereas, if you supply them they will not easily warranty their work on the basis that your parts weren't supplied by them.

    If any machine work is requested the shop will send out the engine and have them build it as well as perform the machining.

    Basically, no shops possess line hones/mills to perform the kind of machining that goes with an engine build. They send out for the specialized bits then they might reassemble it themselves. But it is normal much more expensive to do that then just have the machine shop rebuild.

    There are 3 main machine shops in the city. D&W is the one most performance/shops in the city use.

    Basically, if the engine is already out of the car, it is so much more economical for you to do the work yourself and just sent out the crank for a polish/ bearing sizing.
