There's a lot of activity in the renewables space, as the AB gov't gets ready for renewable development proposals in the next few months. Lots of developers, consultants, financiers etc. Not sure if the Engineers here are interested, but definitely a space to look into and needs engineer/project expertise.

Got any examples of companies that are hiring for these types of roles?

I work an 8 and 6 and the weekend is part of that 6 days off but it doesnt matter because now you work 8 days straight through weekends and public holidays. Every day is a possible work day, theres no monday to friday schedule when you are on shift. You are probably going to be working greater than 8 hours on those work days as well right?

We are allowed vacation but you can't have more than 2 shifts off in a row. I imagine for you it might be only one shift off since that shift is 15 days long. But for us to take 1 shift off which is 80 hours is taking 2 weeks of leave off.

Pretty sure they just have to pay you for vacation.. Which means that they will just add a vacation pay % to your paycheck.

They started doing that for our newer laborer employees, I am pretty sure they do it so its less of a payout/liability when break up hits and they need to cut a bunch.

    This page is quite thorough:

In short, they can do whatever they want. If there is a specific policy, depending on how those policies are enforced, there may be waiting/notification periods for your employer to be able to make the changes.

But other than that, open season.

I'm starting to see things pick up again. I was off for a year, but the feeling I'm getting is that things are coming back pretty good. The engineering companies are picking up and projects are coming back online.

The ground can be quite over dramatic, reality probably lies somewhere in the middle.

Haven't seen it here unfortunately, I think I'm gone in the next few weeks unless something miraculously pops up.

On the services side of things frac crews are booked (regardless of the company) up until the middle of April with lots of the bigger players planning Q2 projects. Cementing trucks are seeing huge delays, and I've even talked to superintendents who can't get shitters or vac trucks for any of their locations.

Besides the big boys I anticipate things to shut down for Q2 as of normal, but there will be enough spill over from Q1 on the service side of things to make Q3 busy as shit.

I usually use services as a leading indicator as they are much more volatile. Producers and projects will catch up.

    Accepted a new job today!

Left my really secure job, but wanted to switch to manufacturing industry and be more hands on. Being stuck in an office was driving me crazy. Should be a nice balance of office and shop.

My advice is to keep trying, I applied for this job multiple times.

    That's not a layoff, that's a firing.

In concert with others. But i only commented on her being let go as she didn't say how any others were let go.

With that said, entirely possible it was "selective".

How PennWest is afloat, let alone actively drilling multi-laterals and strat projects, blows me away. Do they still have Chinese money in the bank?
