Default How to repair clear coat?

OK, so I am guessing some crazy kids were having fun last night, and my truck got egged. I just kinda shrugged it off, and took it to the car wash to clean it all up.

When I got home, I noticed that there were 2 distinct impact sites, and both of them have damaged the clear coat quite seriously. I am not sure how thick a clear coat is, but, the black paint underneath still looks ok. I can run my thumb nail over the area and it catches quite easily and stops my thumb from sliding across.

Is there a product or procedure to use to repair that?

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

    Warranty.

Sounds closer to a paint repair... Fill all that is gouged with new clear and sand/buff to flat.

It's black so - you might want a pro...

Yes. Should be covered under bumper to bumper.

    Wouldn't it?

Polishing wont do anything. The proper way to fix it would be to scuff down the entire panel with ~600 grit (more aggressive where the damage is) and respray clear coat on the entire panel. Is it a metallic or plain jane black?

Another option is to do a localized scuff down and spot in the clear coat with a blend. It would do the trick and cost a lot less but you do risk the chance of the blend line showing up as it ages.

If you are ballsy enough, you can use an airbrush + some 2K urathane clear to do this yourself. Make sure the all paint is landing on scuffed and dulled paint. Make sure you don't burn through into the base coat while sanding. It's kind of a skill you learn with practice so I personally wouldn't do it unless it was a beater vehicle.

How would someone vandalizing a car possibly be covered under a warranty?

Think maybe a couple coats of sealant might diminish the effect enough to live with?

Sounds like such a shitty deal man, I would be heart broken. This is your new truck too?

    Photos?

Depending on how serious it is, try to buff it out before you start sanding and respraying. There are products that are suppose to fill in scratches.
Warranty isn't going to cover vandalism, that's not their issue.

Can't repair clear coat damage once the clear coat is gone with a polisher. You will need it to be re-sprayed.

Maybe just scratch remover and layer on wax and sealant? It should look better when applied.

I used to repair egg stains all the time when I detailed back in high school. Luckily you caught it early enough by the sounds of it. Try a wet sand and polish. 3000g works almost always.

I agree it is worth a try. I imagine it depends on whether there even IS clearcoat left, or if it is right down to the paint itself. If there is any clearcoat, this should work just fine.

That's pretty deep. I think you'd be able to get 90% of that out with a little wet sanding (super fine grit) and then progressively finer grit compounds.

Crazy an egg can do that.

Yes. You can get it looking pretty damn good, but it'll never be back to original.

If it were me, I'd just sand and polish, and roll with it like that.

depending on the damage and how much clear you have left, alot of times wetsanding and polishing. wetsanding could be 1000grit, 1200 grit, 1500 grit etc..depending on various factor.

SSR would be another option as well but these are just methods to make it look 90%-95% better (3 Feet rule).

If you are in calgary PM me and drop by. I can help you check your paint thickness as well as give you some tips on how to repair it.

With the shitty paint on fords, between random eggings and rock chips, this would bankrupt the company

I'm no paint expert but people who restore cars and whatnot seem to be able to do all sorts of amazing localized paint repair. Not as simple as just buffing it out but they can make significant chips effectively disappear so I don't see why this would be any different. Don't know where to find such an expert, but seek one out.
