I am familiar with the story. I read about it when the story first broke. I do not believe though, it was connected with MIT students. It seams whenever there is a gambling story that games the system, it is attributed to MIT students.
My groups took advantage of a similar game in Michigan. We won more money than we spent every time we played the game. The game was eventually discontinued. In the last draw for the game, I tried to convince as many people as possible to join the group. We got up to $3,500 in tickets (there were fewer members then). We won close to $10,000. In hindsight, I should have put up and lot more of my own money.
By the way, local lotteries like Star have very poor payouts. They rely on good will rather than good payouts to boost sales.
