Default Shop to take ford to get codes read

    Hey guys,

just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a shop that can read codes from a ford with an error? I did my gf's wheel bearings on her escape, and got it all back together and her power steering stopped working. it says there is a power steering assist fault (EPAS system has major issues according to google? don't know how i could fuck up electric power steering doing wheel bearings ) after researching i found there is a sensor that shits the bed(torque sensor, $200 hour to change), so i wanna see if thats the code. i guess i somehow could have messed it up.. even though its in the steering column.

There was a recall for this shitty system but i guess they just update some software and send you on your way knowing its going to break again, and i know she had it in and they did that, so it won't be covered under the recall anymore

    Thanks.

It's worth it to call a dealer and have your vin checked through oasis, there were multiple levels to that recall depending on year, some of which were a full replace.
The reprogramming was initially a bandaid fix to allow the units to keep working until Ford acquired enough parts to replace the steering columns.

I might take you up on that, Ford is $175 to do it. I'll look into the compatibility and if I can do it. Thanks man!

I believe they do free code readings at all Autovalue locations and give you a printout of causes and replacements needed...

I called and they said only if the engine light is on, this is just a text error on the digital read out on the dash. thanks though!

I believe Autovalue still does that, yes. Or buy yourself a cheap Princess Auto scanner.

Edit: Guess this isn't a CEL. Nevermind.

FWIW my code reader seems to be able to pull a lot of shit, even some ABS codes and stuff depending on the vehicle. Never tried anything to do with ford power steering but if you wanna give it a shot let me know.

it would be under a chassis code, if your scanner can go module to module it would read it.

IIRC, like you mention, the torque sensor is part of the steering column assembly, its a light sensor that picks up the speed of steering input.

One of the previous TSBs was to replace the sensor, but they stopped doing that repair because the end fault was a damaged control board, requiring a steering column replacement.

    I've got this thing:
    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/FORD-LINCOLN-...EAAOSwEgVWRrcI

It pulls and clears Ford ABS, airbag, GEM and other system codes. Let me know if you want to use it.

Thanks for the info guys, im headed to a buddies tonight to try his scanner out, if it doesn't pick up the correct codes i'll PM you Maxx Mazda and ask what kind of beer you drink haha.. appreciate the offer!

I'm seriously confused as to what could have happened, If it's just dumb luck it happened at the time i did the bearings, or if i upset something to make it happen. we unbolted the tie rod ends, but they came out easy and we didn't put any stress on the steering system at all. I had to remove the ABS/speed sensors from the spindle, but there was no damage to them or their wires, i made sure to be delicate with them.

Now my GF just thinks i wreck shit probably either way i feel like a knob

Edit: Thanks Abeo, will let you know as well! Appreciate the help guys.

Ya, i wanna see if the code says it's the sensor before i replace that for $280. Looks like a simple swap, just don't want to waste time/money on the wrong thing.

    Thanks for your help!

with fords EPAS system its absolutely crucial you unplug the rack power before you do anything to any steering components.

Even just taking off the outer tie rod end?

Ran an OBD II code reader and it said it's not throwing any codes.

Each time an alignment is done where the tie rods are moved the EPAS system has to be reprogrammed so the steering wheel knows where center is.

Shit! So what did i possibly fuck up? will this be an entire steering column replacement?

I looked over a bunch of walk-through's/how to's on the escape before i dived in incase there was anything to watch out for, and no where said anything about this.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Is anyone able to read B, C or U DTC codes? I have the reference chart as to what the codes mean. Could just need to be recalibrated.

If it was just the centre being off, you'd get a traction light warning, but the fact that you have a torque sensor warning and no power steering means that there is a bigger issue.

Full left, then full right on the steering wheel will re train for centre iirc.

Using IDS to calibrate torque, and centre is only required when you replace the column.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that's the procedure.

IDS is needed to reprogram the module when replacing the steering column. Workshop manual shows the last step when adjusting toe is to calibrate the steering wheel positioning sensor. Step 5 of calibrating the sensor is to connect a scan tool and to follow the instructions on the screen and to clear any PSCM DTCs.
