Those are not winters those are OEM tires for the car, they suckered you into paying for nothing those are crap "all" seasons. Use that to aid your case. They shouldn't claim those as winters period,

What is their definition of a winter tire? M+S ?
How do they know troll isn't the Stig? What's your point?

You say the equipment did not fail, then they were pathetic / might have spun out at low speeds... lol

Who gives a shit what their definition of a winter tire could be... That is an all season tire, not a winter tire...

"I paid for winters and this thing has Nitto Nt01s..."
"We call those winters at this rental place"
    "That's cute, not winters..."

I would lean heavily on that leg... It's like paying extra for airbags only to find that they put in beanbags instead... "Oh, we call those airbags"

I seriously doubt it will come down to an argument on whether or not they were winter tires.

Sounds like you're covered with your VISA (if I read correctly), and they will likely ask very few questions.....

I'd stick it to them based on that for sure. M&S tires do not equal real winter tires.

Unfortunately, BC and Alberta considers M+S as winter tires, which means most all seasons qualify. Stupid? Yup. Highway 93 in Alberta requires M+S or snowflake between Nov and April.

With that being said, I've never seen extra costs for M+S. The extra costs are always for snowflake labelled tires.

That's nuts. With M&S tires, one of my old cars wouldn't even be able to back out of my stall. That needs to change.

For reference, AB Highway 93 (Icefield Parkway):

    http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/ab/jas...-ipwinter.aspx

    BC:

    http://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/tr...t-winter-tires

The M+S designation is terrible because it's really only intended for a light dusting of snow. If you've ever driven AB93 in the winter it's always hard compacted snow and cold as fuck.

And for rental companies, I don't remember verbiage on the rental contract that defines a winter tire, so they can argue M+S is a winter tire based on definition. Budget and Enterprise list winter tires on their website but it's vague as well and doesn't exactly mention snowflake label:

    http://www.budgetbc.com/vehicles_winter.aspx

    https://www.enterprise.ca/en/car-ren...ntertires.html

What I don't get is why we NEED a law for people to smarten up. Hmmm let's risk death or severe injury to save $800-$1400 on good snow tires. When we live in Canada. In particular, a region known for real snow, not slushy rain.

For rental companies, they don't want to do it because it costs silly money to store tires for their fleet in the summer.

Quebec does it right, they only qualify snowflake as winter tires, and rental companies there all swap their tires in the winter. The extra fee is tacked on to rentals year round to cover the costs.

I understand that they won't be happy. But this is a rare case where I think that govt should step in and mandate it. The extra fee would be fine imo.

In AB, whoever say this will be political suicide. You of anyone should know that.

I'm surprise this isn't our provincial flag.

I wish. We are Texas North right? It's true, it's not my nature to wish for more regulation. But man, what can we do? People being dummies. Spinning tires and sliding into shit.

And most Montrealers drive Yaris. Winters are cheap for those.

Albertans all drive F150, telling them mud tire is no good in Winter is worst than calling their sons a queer.

Rental companies would probably just end up running snow tires all summer instead of swapping back and forth.

But even that is a huge undertaking, since none of the cars come from the factory with snowflake tires. Based on a conversation with a family member in this business, between the larger companies, the buy around 4000 new cars every year, so that's 16000 tires bought new every year. Even if those tires are fifty bucks including installation, that's Eight hundred grand out of pocket each year. Doubt they could fully recoup that money from customers.

They have to do something though. It's a poor business model if safety is being sacrificed to rent out cars for $39/day or whatever. I don't rent cars so it doesn't affect me perse, however I've noticed that people tend to drive the crap out of them. It's a bad combo.
