    Question Windows can't shutdown

It's an older hp pavillian pc, and it has ran pretty well over the last 5 or so years. The power supply blew a few months ago and I replaced it shortly afterwards with a new one and it's been working fine since.

The problem is as of yesterday the computer won't shutdown, only restarts.

    - from the start menu
    - pressing the power button
    - from the log off screen
    - or from the ctrl + alt + delete screen when I select shut down, computer always restarts

Only way I seem to be able to get it to shut down is restart it, and press the power button when it's on the boot screen, which is kinda annoying. Do you guys happen to have any ideas as to why this is happening?

its probably an incompatability with your new powersupply. i had this once with a computer. your computer is in fact compleatly turning off but then when the computer requests periferal power to keep the clock running etc. it sends power that boots the entire computer (this is what i suspect anyways). it was happening to me like i said exaclty as you described. What i would do is use the little power switch on the back of the powersupply to keep the computer off if I needed to turn it off but most of the time i just let it run. the problem solved its self with a differnet brand powersupply.

Im guessing a Windows 9X/ME machine...
if you have the option of restarting in Dos promt... do that, and power off the computer, it wont harm your computer.

I'd check the BIOS as well. Make sure your power options are set up correctly, and that "resume after power failure" or whatever it's called in your BIOS is set to disabled. Also check your power options in the control panel and make sure there isn't a conflicting configuration causing a restart loop somehow.

When you replaced the hard drive did you ghost the drive or re-install windows? If you ghosted it you may have to do a re-install. Windows may be messed up. It's happen to me before and a reformat fixed it.
