Default SMARTS coming to North America

STUTTGART, Germany -- DaimlerChrysler AG will launch the Brazil-made four-seater version of its small Smart car in the United States in 2006, Smart chief Andreas Renschler said Thursday.

The model will be made at its Juiz de Fora plant -- its first Smart car plant outside Europe -- which produces Mercedes A-class cars for the Brazilian market and C-class saloons for North America

Its the SMART coffin. First accident you get into with an american SUV and you're road kill. Great if you need something you can put $10 of gas in and drive to brazil though.

Looks pretty cool - and it does have to pass Canadian tests for safety to be sold here. It does it's purpose, and does it well.

My info came from Autoweek and they're usually pretty reliable about these things.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

You guys have to realize that in Europe, you NEED small cars like these. Anyone who's driven on the deerfoot, those 3 lanes in Europe would be turned easily into 5 or 6 lanes. When driving on highways and roads in Europe, there is (literally) about 4 to 6 inches between the sides of the cars, whether it be side by side, or a 2-way road with no median, just a yellow line. And parking is another issue in Europe. Stalls are (in general) about 4 inches wider than the average car.

To add to that, if you would double park (park on 2 parking spots, we've all seen this) in Europe, by the time you got back to your car, all your windows would smashed in. I saw this first hand, a guy double parked on a stall and as he was getting out someone else started yelling and swearing at him, and started kicking the shit out his car.

So, for European roads and cities, this car is perfect. And since gasoline cost around $1.40 a liter, fuel economy is a big thing as well. However, for North America, this car won't sell much, it's just not as practical as it is in Europe.
