Just wanted to put it out there ... I received a call after submitting a resume to them, right now they are looking to hire people with NO EXPERIENCE ...
They run a 2 day boot camp, show up with steel toes and they put you to work on a dummy rig for 2 days. If you are sufficient they hire you and give you h2s fall training etc etc and class 1 licence
If you do not succeed then they pay you $200 for the 2 days work, and send you home.

High artic is a snubbing company, not a rig company. They are one of the better snubbers out there. But you wouldn't catch me up on a snubbing basket. I didn't like being around them before I saw slips fail and I sure as hell have hated them since I Have seen them fail.

Kudos to anyone who has the balls or lack of sanity to be a snubber.

^ What is snubbing again? I forgot over the years. I've only just heard about it. Isn't that a service for cleaning the casing or the like?

Snubbing is when they need to put pipe in or pull it out of the well while there is pressure in the well. Usually used when pulling frac string out of the hole after the well has cleaned up and they don't want to kill the well.

Basicly there is two sets of slips, top and bottom, which grip the pipe stopping it from falling down or being pushed up out of the well.

What makes it so dangerous is if the slips fail, and there not enough string weight, the pipe will be forced out of the well with a shit load of gas with it. The pipe causes a spark and boom, your dead.
Of course there are more fail safes than just the slips, but they are generally the reason something bad happens.

There is more to snubbing, but this is the gist of it.

Boot camp pays $200 ... now that I see you're doing 24 hrs of hard labour ... fawk that LOL
Also they want you to either reside in or near Red Deer, or have firm plans of relocating.
They will pay for all your training, H2S, Class 1, Air Brake, Confined Spaces, Fall Training, etc. but if you quit within a year then you must pay all of that back.

Right now they are working 21 on 3 off due to a lack of workers. Once they get staffed up it will be 21/7.

I was interested when the first woman called me, now this chick calls and actually gives me some details ... doesn't work for me, I have a 2 y/o son and I own a house. I can't just hop up and sell the house and pack up the family for a job I'll be lucky to survive the 1 year contract with all my limbs intact.

I had a buddy who worked for High Arctic for years and actually moved up pretty decent position wise but he ended up getting fucked over and fired. But yeah it's a dangerous shiz and hard work, not worth the dollaz if you have other skills....

Anyways... I've been trying to get into the Sparwood mines for awhile, still no luck, and losing hope.

I was wondering what do you guys think is more dangerous, snubbing, or the army? im willing to do anything at this point to make some real cash to go to school in about 2 yrs, or get a free education while working.

^ LMAO, you should talk to my co-worker who served in the army for several years. The army is MUCH less dangerous depending on where you decide to go; but you can honestly forget about making decent money there. Most people in any given division make next to nothing, essentially minimum wage. The only divisions that pay well are the ones that put you in the face of extreme danger, and at that point you need to ask yourself if your financial goals are worth the risk at that point. Honestly; I'd say no they aren't as there are many other ways of making decent money. If you want a free education then sure if you want I can give you his email or number and he can talk to you about it, but dont get these crazy delusions that you can be in the reserve, and still make decent coin.

I used to do wireline, which is *sort of* like snubbing, but with excellent pay and the work isn't nearly as dangerous.
Id get your H2S and go pound on doors out in Red Deer, Nisku, Whitecourt, Medicine Hat, Grande Prarie like I did.

I flew out to GP, and drove everywhere else entirely out of my own pocket until I finally landed a gig in Whitecourt doing Wireline for Schlumberger. Everybody was thoroughly impressed by my initiative, and I was offered 4 jobs by a number of reputable companies. I took the one that seemed best fitting for me, which was Wireline at the time.
With Wireline you can make up to $10k a month take home within your first year or two. I used to take home $6k a month as a newbie, and that was just working fairly standard hours.

You need to go on leads, and stress to the companies that you have the drive and you're willing to go the mile. I assume by your results you aren't doing a good (enough) job of that.

I actually drove down to Sparwood twice, but haven't even emailed resumes for for any oil and gas work, and that's because I still don't have enough info on what most positions require or what they actually do in the field. I work construction here in Calgary and figure I might as well do something harder and away from home to make some decent cash, to get an education.

Yeah I gave up on Sparwood ... I had another beyonder recommend me to a few guys out there and either they were complete idiots with their heads up their asses or they turned me down. I gave up after getting denied by Teck - apparently you require a diploma/GED to drive a haul truck in the pit. I turned around and enrolled with Bow Valley for my GED, within a week I get the denial letter from them.
Sparwood will be booming soon, but not right now. Especially with the explosion Teck just had at one of their operations out there.

Do as Graham said, if you have the initiaive you will get the job. If you pound on their doors with your H2S cert then you're laughing, you will have multiple oil co's after you.
Also as mentioned by Graham - military pays shit. I looked into all the different sectors, and unless you're a specialist, you aren't getting anything worthwhile from them. Only way I would consider military is if I did not have a wife/kid, and a house to pay for. They are great at furthering your education and giving you amazing skills to move up in further careers, but that's the only good pay you get - free education.

Funny thing is I have my HS diploma, and I haven't gotten any letter from them or anything. It's been about a month and a half since I last drove down, they've had my resume for about 2 months. One of my buddies told me it could take upto 6 mths sometimes, and last week when I called the HR department they said my resume was still on file and hadn't gone through a recruiter yet. I still haven't given up, I'll leap at the oppurtunity anytime it comes up.

Ya the Dryer at the Green Hills mine quite literally blew up, I was working right next to it at the Tailing pond in the morning, luckily we decided to take just a half day cause the explosion happened in the Afternoon. I have some pictures on my phone of it, there just not the best quality.

So far as I've been hearing it's gonna be down for atleast 6 months.

The Fording river Dryer also had a pretty big explosion at it 2 weeks back, but it was only down for a week.

If anyone is interested KMC Mining has moved into Sparwood on a 5 Month test contract, with a 5 year extension if the mines like them.

They are currently behind on production so I've been hearing they are looking to hire more truck drivers.
