    Default theft charge question....

so my friend (honestly lol) got fired from her job, and they said that they would be in contact to press charges, and she got fired on the spot. it's been a couple of weeks now and she still hasn't heard anything from the cops.

how long do they have after you've been fired to charge you with anything? is there a set time limit on it?

    thanks in advance beyond!

I think what you're looking for here is the Statute of Limitations but I don't know what the specific time frame is for theft. Maybe five years?

    Was she stealing?

It would help if you told us what she actually did, or did not do.

ok, so my friend worked at a liquor store. she had taken $80 (40x2) and they caught her. she was fired on the spot, and the police were there. the loss prevention officer from the company was there also, and he was trying to say that she was going to get charged with 2 counts (2x$40) of theft under, and 1 count of fraud (all staff members there abused the discount priviledges) for misuse of company policy for discounts or whatever......

the cop told her that he could probably get it all dropped to 1 count of theft under, and told her he would probably be in contact in the next week or so. its been a couple of weeks already and she is unsure of what to do. she doesn't want to ignore it, but she doesn't want to walk around with it on her shoulders not knowing either......

she doesn't have a record besides this, so even if she does get charged she won't get shit.....she's just wondering how long she has to wait before she's in the clear....

How can they give her two counts of theft under $5000 (i think that is what it would be ), if she only did it once? The quantity combined is still under $5k.

what really sucks? That she was dumb enough to risk a job over $80.00?

I have some friends that work in loss prevention for various stores, first offenses get thrown out almost every single time. If someone is on a power trip she still might get charged like she deserves to, though.

oh and tell her to forget about trips to the US anytime soon. If you have a criminal record of any type it is up to the bitter bag at US customs if she will let you in.

If she was a cashier, i think losing her job is the least of her concerns. Criminal records suck... No traveling to the states unless you get a pardon, and getting a pardon costs money and is a huge pain in the ass.

    $80 < Criminal record

I am guessing she will just have to do community service and attend a anti-theft seminar or two. If she actually gets charged that is pretty shitty for what little reward she would have benefited from getting away with it. I guess the most she can hope for is to learn from it.

I thought a criminal record prevented you from traveling to a lot of countries?

Agreed, I just feel no sympathy and find it strange that other people do.

We had a girl at our call center clear her own $240.00 outstanding bill (power bill) and she got fired for it. She was high up in the union and making almost $30.00 an hour. Her manager even told her as she was being walked out we needed people for Saturdays and you could have made $300.00 a day with OT for 5.5 hours work. If she needed money that bad she should have made other arrangements.

To me one days wages isnt worth a job but to each their own I guess.

Would it have been better if it was $800? I'm not sure I understand the tone of this. It seems to say "It's ok to steal from someone/thing as long as it's worth it."

For me, the value of "it's worth it" is somewhere between 10 and 20 million. Because that's what it'll take to live comfortably the rest of my life. If I'm going to sell out my morals, it'd better be "worth it".

If you're pathetic enough to steal then fuck you and your hat, loser. I hope she gets charged and learns a lesson.

I'm sure it's only her first time.......getting caught that is. Do her a favour and kick her in the box.

um, you need a hell of a lot more than a pardon to travel anymore.

the USA wants to see the records of anyone traveling OVER the US airspace. Not just landing there like before.(so that pretty much prevents any travel outside of Canada)

Also, before you can travel you will need a pardon, and waiver, and a good reason to travel(IE: funeral, wedding[maybe], etc)

    all for 80$ lol.

Is it that I implied it likely wasn't her first time (because, come on, it likely wasn't)? Was it that I said I hope they charge her so maybe she learns something? Or was it just that I said to kick her in the box?

How is getting caught stealing $80.00 from your employer any better than stealing $3000.00 from fraudulent flames tickets?

Theft is theft and thieves are losers. Case closed.
