Default 1977 727 Transmission starting in 2nd when in Drive. Annoying!

    Hello.

    Got a 727 3-speed transmission attached to a 360 5.9L.

The damn thing always starts in 2nd when I am in Drive and bogs down/stutters/sometimes cuts out when trying to accelerate from stop.

If I move my column shifter into 1st, the gear works like a damn charm and my starts from rest are super easy, greatly acceleration, etc and I can smoothly shift it into drive.

But! I want to sell my RV and I believe this should be fixed before selling it.

Any idea where to begin? Tranny fluid is good, no leaks. I have a small oil leak where the transmission meets the block but I only need to add a quart every 1,000 km or so.

I'm not a trans expert, but I'd start by making sure the TV cable was properly adjusted and not binding. If you manually put it in first, then drive and it takes off fine, it's likely just the TV cable. If not, maybe look at the governor.

Edit: You said 1st was fine when manually selected, so you probably don't need to adjust the Low/Reverse band, but this is a common problem, pretty much a maintenance item on a 727 and is easy to do. You'll notice slipping more in reverse if the band needs tightening.

Sounds like a bad one way clutch. At least from your description anyway. The one way clutch hold the low drum when not in manual first. So yeah. If no drive first then it skips right to drive second.

When you manually select 1st, it uses the low reverse band to hold the rear carrier.

If it was recently rebuilt, then the idiot put the one way mechanism in backwards. Otherwise, it'll need a complete teardown because its the back most component in the case so everything has to come out to fix it. Not expensive for parts, but the clutches and bands should be looked at while its apart.

^ahha yea don't think i'll be tearing it apart. I'm looking to get $2500 for the whole RV.

I have never worked on a transmission before. What do I need to do to check the TV cable and governor?
