    Default Vehicle Depreciation Curves

In market for used vehicle (ideally 2011-12 Acura MDX with under 100k km) and its kind of overwhelming, trying to figure out what is a good deal or not.

Budget ideally is $25K, but for $30-32 vehicles seem to get much nicer.

How much is average annual depreciation?

I've read 20% first year then 12% yearly after first, does this sound correct?

    Lol no.

The 20% thing is a wives tale and mostly for 'Merican cars.

I'm willing to bet 10% first year and maybe 5-7 every year after. A typical Honda/Acura in my experience in good to excellent shape sees 40-50% depreciation in 5-6 years and 100km or so.

Also, market forces change the depreciation rate on different vehicles.

On Domestic Pickups right now, there is very low depreciation for the first two years as long as you are comparing actual price paid, not the confusingly inflated "sticker price".

cidley69, you seem really to be having a tough time with your used vehicle purchase. Do you have a close friend or family member who you trust who can help you with this? I suspect all your posts on beyond are goign to just end up confusing you more and more.

And for gods sake, once you do buy something, don't tell any beyonder what you actually paid, or some asshole will make it his mission to convince you that you got a bad deal.

Buy the car you want, pay what you can afford. Good luck.

It is so vehicle dependent. MDX's for example hold their value very well, much better than, say, something similar from Cadillac or Lincoln. Average depreciation isn't a useful statistic IMHO since it varies so much depending on the vehicle.

Just check CBB and you'll get a ball park.

MDX is one of those that kept its value for some unknown reason, average asking price is around $30k for what you want.

As stated above....there really is no such thing as a depreciation curve, however, if you wanted to sell your car within 1 to 3 years of it being new, the total loss will be the largest when compared to a car kept for a longer period of time.

Keep in mind, all cash paid for freight, GST, fees, etc are not considered in the resale value of the car.

Based on 20K/year, no accidents, most vehicle depreciate 55 - 60% in the first 4 years .

That's what I'm looking for too.

Any details on how they did that?

    Local?

    Private or dealer?

Was it unadvertised word of mouth deal?

    There's one on kiji 2013 30km for $34k,

That's lots closer to our budget than a new one. The new drive off lot is steepest depreciation part we'd like to avoid, and being couple years old with light kms is ok too.
