whats the difference between carrying a birth certificate or carrying a passport? one is a piece of paper, one is a booklet.

US border guards accept birth certificates from us at least a few times a year and never bats an eye. my kids are 7 and 6 now.

flying or driving? i could have sworn they changed the law so they need a passport when flying but too lazy to look it up now
