    Default Desktop Icons Shifting

The last month or two I've been having an annoying issue and I think it's tied somehow to remoting into my work computer but hasn't always been a problem. Sometimes I think it's because I toggle the option in the Remote Desktop Connection from 'using all monitors' to single depending on the situation. But the issue seems intermittent.

Essentially I'll setup my desktop icons the way I want, and then after closing my remote session all the icons will shift to one side. Does anyone know (A) why this is happening and (B) a way to lock the icons either with Windows settings or software? The 'Align to grid' option is already toggled on and Auto is off.

Likely an RDP issue, perhaps the computer you are remoting from has the wrong screen resolution? Can you adjust it to match your target computers regular monitor resolution?

more amazed that you are still playing some classic FPS games in there lol.

do you VPN to your work environment then RDP or use other programs?

I've had this issue with my PC at home but that's because sometimes I RDP or use VNC to remote to my PC and changing resolution.

saw this program, not sure how safe it is though

Thanks guys. The monitors I have at work at measly 24" while I have 27" at home. Both stations have dual monitors.

Would it be helpful to turn off the monitors at work to avoid this while remoting in?

Remote monitor shouldn't matter as RDP will try to use your local resolution when you have "Use all my monitors for the remote session" checked.

If you use Citrix to RDP to your environment then I've seen older version of Citrix acting up with different scaling. Are you running both monitor at same scaling?

Physical size is less relevant than resolution. Do you have 4k monitors at once place but only 1440P at another for example? If your computer desktop is 4k and all your icons are laid out pretty then you connect with a 1440P setup it'd 'shrink' the desktop which may be why its shuffling icons.

That may be it. I have 1440p on both home monitors, might be 1080 or 1440 at work. I could see that causing issue while remoting in on my work computer but seems less relevant to my home desktop.

We use OpenVPN GUI, definitely not secure or fancy enough for Citrix ha
