Question 2nd gear synchro dying? Big $$$?

Last night I lost a race to a late 90's M3 coupe. By the end of first gear, I had him by a car-length... then came the dreaded shift to 2nd gear. Week by week, its been taking longer & longer to get the shifter to go into 2nd. I pull back towards 2nd and there's like an eternity for the shift lever to actually go all the way back so I can let out on the clutch.

    Is my synchro going bad

I can't say for sure. I'm quicker up to about 20 or 30 MPH... but because it took like 2 seconds to finally get into 2nd gear I'll never know. By then it was kinda pointless as he had two or three car lengths on me

The reverse gear on manual tranmissions usually do not have a synchro, hence the grinding.

My car grinds into reverse if I have the clutch in for a while (because of the lack of a synchro, if the clutch is not engaged the gears aren't rotating in comparison to the engine rpms - so you're jamming the gear's meshes into each other.).

Okay, I'm over-explaining the whole thing

Just look up "clutches & transmissions on http://www.howstuffworks.com/

Damnit I've been discovered. That's the good & bad thing about owning a DeLorean.

Yes, that is me on AF. I come here when I need to talk to cool people who know their stuff. What's your username on AF?

I'm Ranger_X on AF. Almost exclusively on the car modeling forum, but I do occasionally go to the DMC-12 forum. Been in love with those cars since I first watched back to the future when I was 4.

shift it on 1st before you put it on reverse, that will solve your problem, and yeah the reverse gear has no synchro

Reverse gear has no synchro because the only time you shift into reverse is when the car is not moving. You most likely have a straight cut reverse gear, and at times it just doesn't line up. Just wait a sec, and try again while your engine is idling.

put it into first and second, then reverse, you shouldn't hear any grinding whatsoever if you do that

do the BMWs have synchros for the reverse? like in the BMW movie when the guy slams it into reverse when he's cruzing forward which makes the car spin around...

No I don't think it does (guessing) due to safety purpose.
