I don't shop there anymore as they're trying to con themselves off as being "TRULY CANADIAN" (Zellers is now wholly owned by Israeli-American billionaire Jerry Zucker, a man who has no connection to Canada whatsoever). Might as well shop at Wal-Mart.
I thought Zellers was part of the HBC group with the Bay and Home Outfitters?Originally posted by Gainsbarre

i just saw it on the news so dont really know much about it yet, but i am assuming it will be on everything. so that will be pretty good, and will increase their sales quite a bit.
Yup...not only did some American billionaire snap up Canada's oldest corporation, they now have the audacity to use the "TRULY CANADIAN" tagline to promote their Zellers brand (look at the point of sale displays or price scanners when they're not in use the next time you visit Zellers).Originally posted by 5hift

I emailed customer service about this deceptive marketing tactic and they gave me the following reply:
"While Hbc may be owned by an American businessman, the Company continues to operate in Canada, pay taxes to the Canadian government and employ tens of thousands of Canadians across the country."
Pfffttt....so does Wal-Mart. I guess the only difference is that Canadians (such as myself) can actually become shareholders in Wal-Mart and thus benefit from the profits generated by the corporation. Not the case with HBC though...it all goes to an American who lives in South Carolina.
A little late...haha

I do get great service there, especially when I mention my name, haha.
It doesn't seem like Apple has changed their pricing to reflect the value of the Canadian dollar against the US dollar. 16 GB ipod touch is $449 cnd (Apple online Canada) and $399 US (Apple online US)......Originally posted by mekeni

hmm, our oldest canadian company is owned by an israeli with no connection to canada.
Jerry Zucker (b. 1949) is an Israeli-American businessman. A graduate of the University of Florida with a triple major Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, chemistry, and physics, and MS in Electrical Engineering, Zucker resides in Charleston, South Carolina. He was born in Israel.
He is president and CEO of InterTech Group. In 2006 he acquired the Hudson's Bay Company, North America's oldest company, becoming its Governor.
Now that we have a few more billionaires, may be they will buy some foreign companies and advertised as locally owned.
That's the game for a global economy.
If a Canadian store run by Canadians for Canadians, why can't it be called "Canadian"?
Because corporations are in business to maximize profits. And the profits go to the owner, who is an American. Until it falls back into Canadian ownership, I no longer consider HBC/Zellers Canadian (same is true with companies like Molson, Tim Hortons and Fairmont).Originally posted by Xtrema

As opposed to be run by who? Fact is that he's not operating here 'for Canadians' and has no options but to hire Canadians. It's all about the profits. I admit I would sometimes get stuff from Zellers because it was no further than Walmart from my house but only because I thought it was a Canadian company.Originally posted by Xtrema

I read on the weekend in the newspaper that Honda has finally dealt with the rising Canadian dollar. The way they handled it was not by lowering prices in Canada but instead banning Canadian buyers in America.Originally posted by mekeni
