Perhaps you need to revamp your career!?

I work for a structural fabricator... not many office employees = lower overhead = more monies for me!

IMO the smaller companies have almost always paid better!

Yeah I blocked Facebook at my office and productivity has gone back to normal again. It dropped by about 25% as everyone was on there, even the supervisors

Now time to block all those video sites like YouTube and Google Video as that's eating up so much bandwidth!

It sucks to block these things, but there are ways around it if you search a little *cough* PROXY *cough*

But it has to be done. When you're on a dedicated line and you're being charged per GB of bandwidth, it's not fun getting the monthly bill from the ISP for $2000+ dollars (when we average about $1200/month - back when there wasn't YouTube/Facebook).

It's hard being the enforcer, but if you don't then the yearly bonus is less, and that affects everyone not just you. But the average joe doesn't see that. They just see it as us being asses and not letting them do what they want. It's all about saving $$$.

If you disagree with that policy then ask yourself this question:

If I bought a car (asset, much like a computer) for an employee to use for delivering pizza, would I be happy if that employee was using that car (plus expenses for gas, insurance etc.) to go visit his girlfriend and take her to dairy queen?

Probably not. The other thing you have to understand is that the company is just protecting itself, so when you go out on the internet and cause some sort of damage (perhaps slander?) to a customer or business partner, they can say look, we have this policy and he knew we monitored our employees, clearly this person was on a frolick and we are in no way responsible for the damage he has caused.

If you know much about computers proxy or vpn your traffic. To be nimble about it use a U3 enabled USB thumb drive and install Firefox to it. From there you can install a proxy or VPN plug in.

Your not installing it to your computer. Let me explain. U3 is a technology that allows you to run, save, and modify things JUST off the U3 drive. It is the same price as a normal USB drive but has it's own launch bar similar to the 'Start' button in windows. You can load app's such as FireFox, OpenOffice etc etc just to the U3 drive. When you plug it in it's going to detect as a CD-Rom drive and or a Thumb drive. No harm done.

Not many people know about this technology which scares the shit out of me.

That's how it has been done till now, and how it should be done imo. It's the picking and choosing of so called "time wasting" to crack down on that gets me. Nothing is stopping anyone else from all the things I first mentioned. I don't like it when short-sighted people take knee-jerk reactions to "solve" a problem that only likely exists in their head. The fact the we've kept turnaround times nearly 50% faster this entire year while our workload has increased over 30% and our staff levels have decreased tells me that we are functioning pretty damn efficiently.

But hey, throwing the big brother mentality out there at everyone will make people happier, healthier and even more productive I am sure!

Check out the Privacy Act for Canada, I think it was passed in 2001. I read it front to back one day and remember it saying something about it being illegal to log internet usage. That's why all the porn busts in Canada happen when they catch the material on the suspect's hard drive, but in the USA I think they just log it at the ISP. I vaguely remember but check it out.
