    Police ease C-Train fears

Officers will ride northeast line for 3 months
Joel Kom, with files from Kim Guttormson, Calgary Herald
    Published: Friday, February 15, 2008

Commuters who say they sometimes feel unsafe on public transit were applauding news that Calgary police officers will ride C-Trains.

On the heels of two homicides and two other attacks on women near C-Train stations, Calgary police launched a three-month pilot project Thursday solely dedicated to beefing up security on and around the city's LRT system.

Valentine's Day marked the first day of the new beat that will see as many as 10 police and Calgary Transit peace officers on a section of the C-Train's northeast leg all at once.

"Just with our officers riding the train, it's going to make the public feel safer," said District 5 Acting Insp. Jim Leung. "We're looking for some big gains."

    Transit riders were pleased.

"It's the deadest place at night here," said Susy Mikesic, 29, who got off the train Thursday evening at Franklin station. "For me, if I'm by myself, I like seeing a cop around."

    LOL nice clarification

I think it's a positive step forward, as I can totally see how riding the C-train at night (or sometimes even during the day) can be a bit unnerving for some people.

That's the problem, it'll make the public "feel" safer, that's it, once they leave the train station it's still the same situation as before.

What a waste of CPS manpower - they already have a shortage of officers.

The thugs will just start riding the other C-Train lines instead.

How is that a waste? If they allready had it happening like in most major cities accross the world these attacks probably wouldnt have happened in the first place and maby lives could have allready been saved. If not CPS least put more C-pigs out there or something, even undercovers would work.

Exactly - they can just use transit officers. Those police officers being paid to ride the train could be more productive and "saving lives" elsewhere.

With Calgary growing the way it has been, I don't see how people can be surprised when crime rate goes up. Considering how many people ride the train each day, 4 incidents in a city of a million people is pretty damn good in my books. 1 of them doesn't really count either because it was a drug deal gone wrong.

People should have more common sense and ride the train together late at night (or better yet, avoid it altogether).

I don't ride that line. But if it isn't dark out, is there really a problem? Or just perception of a problem?

I think CPS with AMA are handing out free Auto Club as well to promote auto theft prevention in the NE.

I am a grown male and sometimes I don't feel safe getting off at Marlborough at 9:30 at night when I work late.

This is good. Although I am sure they could do the same with CT officers rather than police officers. Just give them better training and guns.
