Long overdue for a home theatre refresh and looking for a “101” on the most efficient way to wire things up and the technology specs that are “must have” these days.
Historically I’ve used a home theatre PC for streaming/gaming and an older model Onkyo receiver to drive a 7.1 system (THX compatible, but nothing more current codec wise)
In the hopes of simplifying my streaming process I moved to an Apple TV but I’m finding that the single HDMI output is preventing me from using the configuration I was in the past. Specifically, I’d like to retain the option of using TV speakers or surround depending on what I’m watching and whether our kid is trying to sleep upstairs. With the PC this was straight forward as I just output audio over both HDMI (to the TV) and optical (to the HT receiver).
My TV does have audio pass through via optical but doesn’t appear to be capable of passing through surround signals from the Apple TV to my receiver.
Happy enough to upgrade my old TV and/or receiver if needed, but seems like I’m missing something simple tech wise as I would think this would be a fairly common “use case” that people have. Seems like eARC may be part of the equation here?
