Have bought all my own cars, don't agree with parents handing kids nice cars at 16 or whatever but had my parents been in that kind of financial situation and wanted to give me a car I probably wouldn't turn it down

I worked hard for what I have, and I continue to work for what I want. I've never been given handouts by my parents, nor have I expected any.

As 88CRX said, there's a huge difference between having something given to you and having earned it. A person is more likely to take good care of something they've earned. There is also a certain element of pride in buying something like a car by yourself.

Of course, my Parents bought me first few cars ... I was a foreign student, no income ... all the money for my first 6-7 year .. was from my parents .. nothing wrong with it ..... ( I did part-time too, but doesn't help much for extra $400 a month! couldn't pay insurance )

And then for my first house I bought 4 yr ago.. my parents helped me for the downpayment as well ...

If your parents buy you a car, and under thier name, it is their car, if whoever buys you a car, under your name, that is your car .. my wife drives my car all the time as well, but that is still my car ..

If your parents buy you a car, if it's a basic car, or an old hand me down car, fair enough. But if its brand spanking new and or they went out of their way to buy an expensive car, obviously you don't deserve it.

I think you should always earn what you get.

I know there are a lot of members here who have nice fancy rides but didn't pay for them, and a lot more that worked really hard for their cars. If you didn't buy it, it's technically not yours, and you know it damn right.

When my kids turn 16 am I going to buy them a car? Absolutely. It'll be some beat up POS that I get for $500. If they don't like it, they can buy whatever the want. I live out in the country, and plan to when I have kids, so they kind of NEED a car.

However, I'ma make my kids work their asses off for their cars.
