Default Puff Puff Pass, car smokes under boooost!

    Hey guys,

Recently my car has been giving off quite a bit of blue smoke.

It only occurs after idle if I rev it hard, leading me to believe that the turbo seals are leaking oil and then the turbo is burning it. Once the car has moved for a bit, I can't see the smoke anymore so I don't think THAT much is leaking.

I checked the compression and it was:

    125 125
    120 125

A little low, but at least it's consistently low.

What do you boys think, amiright in my assumptions?

Also, if anyone has an old 02-03 WRX TD04 they would like to lend me for $50 while I rebuild this turbo, that would be freaking awesome.

sounds like turbo seals as you have described it.

Is everything still normal in the boost department? spool time, peak pressure etc?
Is the turbocharger making any odd noises?
Does it sound like an ambulance by any chance?

Check the oil lines around the turbo for leaks as well.

Also, pull the inlet pipe off the turbocharger and look for excessive oil in the piping going into the intercooler.

    Hopefully it's an easy fix.

The turbo feels and sounds totally fine. It stinks like burnt oil when its driven. I'll pull it off tonight and see if I can find any oil in the intercooler.

check your crankcase ventilation as well (pcv & breather line etc...) I find oil burning on the hot turbo usually comes out white. And oil that's been burned in the combustion process comes out blue due to chemical change. So i would most likely assume it's oil getting into the cylinders somehow.

The PCV valve makes a lot of sense. The car has also been leaking waaay more water out of the exhaust than it used to. I checked it and it's definitely water, not coolant.

I'll replace it tonight and we'll see what happens. If I misdiagnosed it and the turbo will last until next spring, I will be prettay damn stoked.

Crack your intercooler inlet pipe and check for 710 fluid.

Booyah! Thanks a ton Cooked Rice. The old valve was pretty gummed up and with the new valve in it doesn't smoke and doesn't leak water out the exhaust.

Hopefully the turbo lasts through the winter for spring upgrades...
