Going to China!!
so lucky girl that I am, I get to go to Beijing on Wednesday! After all the time lost enroute, I will really only have like 4.5 days to take in the sights. Of course I intend to see the Great Wall, Forbidden City/ Tian'anmen Square, etc. Has anyone been to Beijing before? What else as far as MUST see/do's?? ooohhh! I'm so excited!

awesome. went there 1.5 years ago....
the places where you listed are really only the good places to go.. tourist places.
bring a digicam.. so many things you'd want to take a picture of. I took alot of pictures when i went there.. brought my laptop also, so that I could store all my pics.
Bring lots of shorts/tshirts. very very hot. . especially at the wall... bring water too... long ways up the wall.. but totally worth every bit of energy.
go eat too... try out some of the local stuff.. pretty good.. one more thing.. don't go wandering by yourself.. might not come back with all your body parts.
have fun and have a safe trip.

apparently there aren't any shots that I need to get... no disease for me!
as for taking shorts and t-shirts.... it's WINTER in Beijing! hottest it will be is probably +10 celcius... if I'm lucky
no worries about taking pics.... I got a Canon powershot s400 for xmas, and I've been whoring it ever since.

beijings weather is very much like Calgary, dont expect more or less!!!
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH WHAT U EAT!!! ITS REALLY REALLY SCARY WHAT THEY DO TO THEIR FOOD (at certain places of course), stay away from small places, chances are u'll get very very sick. u just cant imagine what they do to make their food

the weather is very much like Calgary and might be even worse!
so be sure to bring enough clothes to keep u warm.
try not to buy anything but if you do, always try to cut price down!even if you think the price is cheap enough just keep going!!or better yet, try to find some decent local to do it for u!!

I'd suggest extending your visit another week if possible. It's a long way to go for only 4.5 days.
Don't forget to bring enough memory for your S400.

When I was there, one of the things that really bothered me was the attitude in the restaurants. Since it's all Communist, a lot of the people don't even do a half-decent job of cooking or serving you. I remember my Peking Duck still had feathers on it. And I think it was better in Calgary than in Peking (Beijing).
I think this has already been covered, but the bootlegging there is incredible. In most of the booths, you can haggle down to at least half the asking price, normally even more.
Sadly, I think that most of the interesting places to visit have become tourist traps, particularily the Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City. It's always neat to see though, and there are some amazing things to take pictures of.
I've heard that China is a lot cleaner now than when I went, in the aftermath of SARS.

I went 2 years ago in December and it was like -60 or something with the windchill. Definately way colder than any day I've seen in Calgary.

ok... so had an AMAZING time in Beijing! too bad it was such a short trip... will definetly have to hit it again (maybe when its warmer this time!). If anyone is interested in seeing some pics they are posted here
