    Default Another what vehicle thread..

Running the wives Matrix into the ground (over 300k km now.. 2007) as my commuter. Typically commuting 2-3x a week, 50 km one way from Cochrane. Just planning for the future that will eventually show up

    - want to use it for commuting to and from work.
    - ideally also useful for hauling MTBs to bragg creek/moose (not shuttling)
    - winter use for backcountry skiing (smith dorrien and hwy 93N). Do have my tacoma for the really bad days, but would like to move towards using a smaller vehicle if its just me and one other.

Have looked pretty hard at the Rav4 Prime. I could probablyplug in at the office and essentially commute for "free" on the way home every day, which is pushing me this way. But the primes are ~10k more, and then worse on gas for bigger drives than the Rav4 Hybrid. Does the prime make sense for winter use if most trips for skiing are ~200-300km? Sounds like the Prime wait isnt really a thing anymore.

    - dont have 240 in the garage currently. Looks like can charge w/ a regular ol outlet just takes forever
    - prime is 10k more, but get 5k on the rebate

Any other vehicles worth looking at? We're essentially a Toyota family now after having essentially zero issues with over 600,000km on our two combined vehicles.

Wait time on the prime, plus paying over MSRP, makes the whole thing kind of unappealing. The "regular" Rav4 hybrid is a good vehicle and probably worth looking at. I like the CRV better, but if you are toyota people don't mess with that.

One way to test your dedication to the electric benefits of the prime.

Would you consider a model y? Little bit more money over the prime, but way more electric range ( for the LR ) and associated savings if you buy into that.

If not, the regular hybrid is probably plenty good for your needs like ES says.

Trying to shoehorn the ski trips into it seems forced, Tacoma is a much better vehicle for back country skiing use imo.

have zero interest in Tesla. I would have significant range anxiety, where the Plug in hybrid removes that entirely from my brain.

85% of trips with the tacoma i never even think of throwing it in 4H... pretty rare that we actually have enough snow to require it.

guess i should just calculate the actual $$ savings if i can plug in at home and work and how long it would take to pay off the extra 5k (after rebate)

Have you talked to a dealer about availability of the prime model?

If you and her liked the matrix, the Corolla Cross now fills that niche in the lineup, even though it's larger than the Matrix. If it's just an AWD commuter you want, that's going to save you some size and weight from the Rav4, and Dollars too. Available as a hybrid if you like that sort of thing. $41,500 for hybrid, a tiny bit cheaper for ICE version.

You can actually get an AWD corolla Sedan, although I like the hatchback form factor better.

Corolla Cross seems to be the correct answer for a Matrix replacement and for what you're looking for.

I wouldn't recommend a Y for his situation at all. Skiing in the winter with an EV right now just isn't worth considering. Loss of range in the winter isn't as big of deal for day to day life however LL to Calgary and back is more than what you'd have for range so you're stuck charging in winter every trip.

If he can get a prime without going over MSRP and can plug in at work then I'd recommend that route over any EV today. Unless he wants to just accept taking the Tacoma on ski trips and using an Ev only for commuting and summer trips, it's not worth it atm. PHEV solves that issue though so a Prime is still a good option and gets rid of the range anxiety issues.

My cost is about $2 per 100kms when plugging in at home. Compare that to a fuel efficient car gettting ~6L/100kms at 1.50/L which is about $9/100kms. So take whatever you spend on gas and you'd save about 3/4s of that by plugging in. Or more if you get free power at work.

$7 a commute takes a while to add to 5k, with the assumption i can plug in.

Sounds like you need a Land Cruiser… it’s hybrid and just as impossible to get as a Prime, but at least doesn’t scream “I sit to pee”

Talked to Ryan at red deer. sounds like its kind of a get your name down and it could be 3 months, could be a year.. and its likely you get the model that shows up, not something you specifically build.

Just get the hybrid if you drive your cars to the ground and skip the prime.

When time comes, 1.8kwh is much cheaper to replace than 18kwh.

These are all reasonable replacements for a Toyota Matrix.

Having rented a Pacifica PHEV in Florida last month, I’m even more sold on phevs. No range anxiety, and only spent $5 on gas over 2 days zipping between Orlando and Cape/Port Canaveral. Our hotel as well as Kennedy space center had free charging. Only used gas between 2 cities because electric range maxed out at 32 miles while distance between the 2 was 46. For a city car, 50km a day range would be mostly electric driven.

Really hope sienna comes out with a prime version. When we’re ready to downsize, rav4 prime is the way to go. 5s 0-60 is a huge bonus too.

My sister bought an Outlander PHEV as she couldn’t wait the two years for a Rav Prime. Had it over a year now and she’s really happy with it. Spends next to nothing on fuel commuting daily. Only downside to the Mitsu is it doesn’t go EV when it’s -20 and left outside. She has heated underground parking so that really hasn’t been an issue anyway. Way nicer inside than any Toyota imo.
