I can try to help...

I believe the LAST RWD Volvo car you can buy is the 240 series. the 7 / 8 / 9 / S / C / V series are all FWD (and some are AWD).

My volvo 90 240DL was on original engine and tranny when I sold it at 490 000km. The engine was still running strong, did not burn any oil. I had to do the timing belt and clutch at 480 000. I purchased the car when it had about 470 000.

If you want a fast sleeper, my vote is on the 850 Turbo - basically a fast brick. Either that, or i've seen people swap 350sb or 302's into the 240.

OF course if i'm wrong about anything above someone correct me - I haven't had a volvo in almost 6 years now.

most newer volvos are FWD or AWD but I do believe the 8 series is RWD; they do use turbos throughout a lot of the models, so lots of potential' if you're buying used, its very hard to find a manual tranny despite all models coming with the option for one. Good resale valus in Canada, especially on AWD platforms.

Check out swedespeed.com for a tonne of info

850 is Volvo's first FWD sedan (for NA)

If you go for a 850, buy a 95+ (nicer front/tail lights)..the design is alot trimmer and 'modern' looking
I don't know too much on them, but they're pretty smooth and powerful to drive.....go for a turbo one, even the"light turbo," which came out in 1997 (the 'GLT'), with 190hp

Also, with 95+, they began offering side airbags (the first, and impressive considering many cars just started putting them in within the last 2 years)

Also, turbo's were only auto.

Not to be a dick but you are all partially wrong.

Volvos that are RWD
240
740
940
960 last year made - 1998

FWD/AWD models
850 first year 1993
all S/V/C and XC models

If you are looking for a 2 door rwd turbo you will want an older 244 they are hard to find without rust.

If you just want a rwd turbo with a 5 speed i suggest a 740 T
they are newer and in most cases alot better condition. Right now I have an 89 740 Turbo wagon with a manual tranny. The car is awesome lots of power and handles nice, it also has over 360 000 km on the original motor/tranny...

as far as the 850 goes the best year for an 850 turbo is 94 because they had larger more powerful turbos.
oh and the turbos dont only come auto either, i used to own a 5 speed 850 t it was really fast....

any other questions just let me know

lol

Volvos are pretty sweet the ultimate sleeper, I have made a few people angry when they get spanked by a rusty old stationwagon :)

the nice thing about the old Rwd turbos is that a $10 manual boost controller and a boost guage you can crank the boost to 15 psi all day long and have no issues the motors are built really well....

the newer models come with some cool options too; i looked long and hard at a 2002 C70 Coupe with the High Output turbo. It came with a whitish-ivory leather interior and had a full DTS surround audio package. They were one of the first cars to offer DVD Audio and DTS audio in a vehicle.

Really nice cars, if i had the money, I'd take Volvo over an audi, bimmer or benz.

And they're sweet done up too:

bmeir is correct. The 200/700/900 series are all RWD, 800 series is FWD. If you're looking for cheap, look in to the 740's. I picked up my wagon for $500, put a little money in to it (boost controller, gauges, exhaust, etc) and it's one hell of a fun car to drive. Just make sure you buy a manual tranny.

If you're looking for a 2-door 200 series, I know of a clean chasis that may be for sale. It's stripped down to nothing and it's been cleaned up of all the rust. Just needs to be painted and reassembled. PM me with your contact info and I'll see if Dale is still looking to get rid of his.
