TOKYO — Honda has filled its latest prototype vehicle with numerous safety technologies in an attempt to create a super-safe car for the masses in the near future.

The prototype came about through Honda's involvement in the Advanced Safety Vehicle project of the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The ministry initiated the first phase of the project in the early 1990s. This is the third phase, which focuses on driver support and precrash solutions.

So ASV-3, as the vehicle is called, is based on a current Accord, equipped with onboard cameras and radar technology to detect obstacles in the road, and an intervehicle communication system, which helps in situations when cameras and radar alone may be insufficient. The car has simple tactile signals for drivers, such as vibrating the brake or accelerator pedal or applying torque to the steering wheel. And the car provides audio and visual warnings to other drivers and motorcycle riders.

Honda also developed what it calls Operation Center, which is fairly similar to General Motors' OnStar.

i wonder if it's the same car from a Daily Planet episode where it actually assists steering if the vehicle drifts away from the lane.
