I'm going to assume that it's better to have a 16mb cache on a 250gb hd than an 8mb one, is that correct?

Yup...
Hard drives are unlike golf.

In addition, you want to be sure of a few factors with buying a new hard drive:

1). Size...
2). Speed (7200RPM or better)
3). Connection (IDE / SATA)
4). Cache (2MB - 8MB - 16MB)
5). Warranty...

i think about ALL ELSE pick a reliable unit. Speed does not help if your drive is dead.

Definately choose an 8mb or 16mb drive, and if possible an NCQ enabled drive and board.

Brands to consider:
Seagate

Brands to not consider:
Maxtor

Everyone will have personal experiences with brands (both good and bad) but from seeing defective and return rates for thousands of drives a month - my money is on seagate.

That would be the case if i'm talking about DOA ... if the head isn't aligned from the fall it's going to be dead out of the box :)

i guess if you talk to 10000 people you'll get 10000 opinions on it :D

Battle of the computer retailers LOL. But anyways, i'd have to agree with hampstor on that one. Maxtors have been nothing but trouble. Have an 80 gig for my xbox that is really noisy, and i had a 120 maxtor that i sold that was also really noisy and I figure was about to die. I now have a 120 and a 200 gig barracuda that have been really good.

Don't worry about it. HDs are like cars, everyone has an opinion, and everyone agrees to disagree.

I've had no problems with the old drives on my computer.

IBM 40GB - 5 years old

Maxtor 60GB - >3 years old

I have a 250GB Seagate that I bought 2 months ago still in its anti-static shipping bag. Too damn lazy to install it. :)
