I have windows millenium edition on my 1.4 celeron and it keeps giving me an illegal operation error every few times. My buddy never gets this with his XP but it runs super slow on his 1.0 athlon.

my question: worth the $300 upgrade? they have a sale at office depot which is 10% off so should i jump on this? will it have those stupid annoying illegal operation errors?

There are some who consider people using Windows ME to be... unnatural.

Make sure you are running atleast 256 MB of RAM, a processor above 1 GHz and decent (around 12GB MINIMUM) hard drive space.

512 RAM would be optimal...

Windows ME is complete garbage... It is garbage that has been sitting in the sun too long (since approximately the millenium actually)...

He's right. Windows ME is actually the worst edition you can buy. Definitely upgrade to XP. It will make a world of difference.

I've got a P4 1GHz with XP on it, ran a little slow when i just had 256mb, but upgraded to 512 and runs pretty decent.

As far as that new OS, Windows Vista, apparently the system requirements for it are outrageous. Something like 1GB RAM, 3.0+ processor and some kind of outrageous video card. So I've been told.

So as far as waiting, unless your going to buy a new computer, i'd still get XP.

Now i'm not 100% sure, but I think you can use the OEM edition.

Windows XP is definately worth every penny. It's faster than any other windows i've used before, and its more reliable. It rarely crashes.

Only if you purchase an INTEGRAL (Motherboard, Memory, Hard Drive, Processor) INTERNAL COMPONENT at the SAME TIME can you qualify for OEM discount. Well some retailers are a bit lax on this policy but this is the rule from microsoft. I will dig through my Email to find the official word for everyone who is interested.

AFAIK, Memex will let you buy an OEM copy if you buy ANYTHING. You could buy a mouse, and still get the OEM copy.

What microsoft says on their official OEM eligibility contract and what other retailers do is not something I can or want to comment on :nut:

Having talked to Microsoft about this, OFFICIALLY you must buy a non peripheral hardware item.

Unofficially, they'd rather see a customer buy an OEM copy then pirate it.
