Which "mechanic" did you take it to?

Flooding out or rich may be a stuck injector or cold start injector leaking, take it out of the "shop" and to a bmw dealership, they may charge more but they can specifically test the fuel system for things like that, the injectors often leak, especially the cold start, and if its stuck then it will cause it to run very rich and yah, possibly die out.

The problem has not yet been fixed but for my guess and the way the car sounds (running rich) it seems to be the mass airflow sensor would anyone agree or am i mistaken?

I have been having the same problem with my M10 E30/ yes that would be the problem with it. The mass air sends info to your computer and if thats info is wrong it really screws it up.

I cant even start my car at all right now. I cant even find a MAF sensor right now for less than 300$ used.

Good luck

Yup it's the afm
Go to pick n pull, you might get lucky and find one there. One off of a 528I should be the same too(much more common out there)
Not to badmouth the shop you have it at but this is a very easy problem to diagnose. There is only 6 wires I believe on the maf, really easy to test.Don't rule out a wire being broken on the harness, right on the connector.Test the meter before you shell out any money for one, they don't usually die all of the sudden, usually die slowly.
