car troubles

My 1996 mercury sable will not start. It started becoming difficult to start it park, would sometimes have to shift out of park and then back in. Today it would not start, turn the ignition key and nothing. Some one told us that it was the ignition but not wether it was the assembly , switch or any other part that might be in there. Anyone have a better clue than I do???????

you can test for spark..
take the spark plug wire out of the spark plug.. stick a screw driver in it.. stick it close to a ground ont he car.. AWAY FROM the battery.. crank.. see if there's spark..
if no spark..
try changing the ignition.. ignition pick up.. coil... OR last and most expensive.. DISTRIBUTOR!! lol..

I would say that if it starts after you move it out of park and then back into park it might be your neutral safety switch. Try starting the car with the trans in neutral.:)

Exactly what I'm thinking. Especially given that he indicated it does nothing when he turns the key.
Do all of your other electrics work? (i.e. you turn the key to accessory, does the radio work?) Just making sure it's not a dead battery.

if nothing is happening it could be your starter or your fuel pump.....if it is trying but "doesnt have the juice" to get started up it could be something electrical
