My key (1989 nissan 240sx) and one of my friends keys (1988 nissan 300zx) will work on my other friends car (1991 240sx) to both open the door and start the car up. His keys work to open our doors but not start our cars. All of our keys have a pretty different shape so i am wondering how is this possible.
Did nissan make a pretty generic lock set so as long as you have a older nissan key it will work some where or is it purely coincidence?
Any one in calgary notice this to, or have you never tried it

If this thread compromises the safety of anyone's cars please delet it. If not please explain how this works.

Old locks, I could start my old cavy with a bike lock key.

Although there may be only 13434343 possible different key types and 13434344 possible key locks.

Key codes are reused after some time, I do believe. So it could be pure luck.

Also could the cylinder be worn out? Have you tried anyother keys in your friends car?

Nissan's locks weren't the best so if the keys are quite similar then you could interchange them to work. If the keys don't look that similar, its probably the lock. Sometimes some of the pins in the lock will get stuck in the shape of the key, so when you put another key in that has a similar profile to it, it will open the lock. Get some graphite to free up those pins.

I'm surprised more GMs aren't stolen every year if that's the case. Sounds like someone really dropped the ball... That is if you're right.
