That shot was taken with a modified camera... Its been modded to take shots in IR (Infra-Red). Which would make it look not so real.

Ok, my pictures were not taken this month, but I have something to ask.

I think everybody notices the difference between these 3 sets of pictures. Gripenfelter's pics are very nice, but they just don't look professional (no offense :) ) Same with mine. Now, if Ekliptix, D'z Nutz or DJ Lazy were to go to the exact spot, at the same time, they would take a picture that looks completely different from ours!!

How the hell do you guys do it! Do i need to be an expert at photoshop to alter the image to get it to look like that? Do i need to buy a $5000 camera? Do I need to go to school for 2 years to learn how to do that? Or all of the above?

Seriously, it's starting to piss me off haha. I have a canon sd300, which I thought was a pretty decent camera. I know I can't get as good as pictures as you guys with your d70 or w/e it is that it seems like most of you guys have....but is there any way that I can even get half as good as you guys with my current camera?

Im so confused and frustrated :banghead:

A lot has to do with the equipment. Quality of the Sensor, Lens Clarity, all that good stuff.

I mean if a $300 camera took the same quality photos as a $3000 camera, it wouldn't make sense right?

This is why the great MegaPixel Debate is garbage.

There are cameras out there with more megapixels than mine for a quarter the price, but when that big MP cheap camera has a garbage sensor compared to a professional one, all you're really getting is more megapixels of grain and substandard clarity. With the pro camera, you could upsize the image to that larger megapixels size, and it would still look better. Thats my .02 on that.

There IS a LOT of photo-manipulation on this forum these days, often it is difficult to truly compare the original quality of the image to that of the final touched up one, however at the end of the day it's a big combination of things:

- You can have a great camera, and not have a clue how to use it = Average Photo
- You can have a great camera and really know what you're doing = Great Photo
- You can have a basic P.A.S Camera and Really know what you're doing = Good Photo

Knowing what exposure levels and apertures to use in what situation can drasticly effect the end result.

ie:
Basic photo, nothing too complex, but with attention being paid to aperture, exposure, foreground and background lighting, and depth of field, it actually looks kinda neat:

http://www.psylence.com/Portfolio/walkway.jpg

Photo was taken with Canon 300D and Kit 18-55 lens. Nothing special. No filters, or photoshopping (other than border/name)

A lot can be achieved via photo manipulation, however looking from a purest aspect, I would say it just comes down to practice and experience. You'll reach the ceiling of the cameras ability, and then move up from there. Thats what I did. 40,000 images taken in 2004 will do that. haha.

Controlling our camera settings
Waiting for the right light
Using filters, (polarizer, nutral gradient)

Just practise man. And ask questions. Other than some really basic stuff, I know very little about PS. (There's been times when I tried tweaking some photos in PS and end up butchering it! Haha!) Like Ben said, decent gear is good to have but to a certain point. It's how you use it. And I've never taken any photography classes before, though I still consider it once in a while just to cover some basics I may have missed. But in the end, I think it really boils down to practise. Just in the last 6 months alone I can tell my photos have gotten better because I go out with my camera so often.

My sister uses IR for wedding shots occasionally.

The D60 I purchased had its internal cut filter replaced with a B+W 87c infrared filter, so its a dedicated IR body now. So no more visible light for that camera!

The nice benefit is I can use any lenses without worrying about filter sizes/stepping rings. Some lenses work better than others because of the coatings on the glass, however. The downside is AF backfocuses because of the different thickness of the filter from the original one. I wish they made a split image screen for the D60 so I'd know my MF is spot on. Metering's out of wack too, so there's a lot of trial and error depending on the lighting situation.

What is your sister using for IR?

Word on the lighting. Sometimes I have to wait days or weeks to try and get an outdoor shot I've been thinking about. A friend of mine already has January 30th, 2006 at 6:00pm planned for a shot he's trying to replicate from before that he can't get right unless the sun's in the correct spot! Haha!

The others have responded to your question better than I can, but I'd like to share my two cents regardless.

You didn't put my pictures in your comparison, but I can garuntee they look a good shade less professional than, for example, D'z Nutz's shots. For example, look at the very first picture in the thread, the pigeon. The level of detail in the feathers is astounding. That's the big advantage of the better cameras; they take photos that are closer to the way your eye sees things. My photos, on the other hand, look far less detailed and sharp.

The camera I use is a Toshiba PDR-3300. It's a hunk of garbage, really. A mere 3.2 megapixels, very limited manual controls, not a camera a self-repecting photographer would ever consider using. Heck, the only good thing about it is its Canon lens. The pictures it takes are invariably grainy and the level of detail is very low. I can't afford a better unit, nor will I be able to in the forseeable future.

That being said, there are ways to circumvent the crappiness of my photos. The first thing that I did that improved my shots was buying a tripod. My camera is extremely sensitive to shake if the flash is turned off, so it takes much, much better pictures with the tripod.

Now, a guy with a nice camera can take a picture of an everyday thing (see the pigeon) and have it look breathtaking, just from sheer level of detail and image quality. Since I can't do that, I have to try and make up for it with creativity. If you look at the second photo I posted (The one with the white action figure), you can see the background seems to be lit differently than the standing figure. This was accomplished by using a blacklight to bring out the "fiery" look of the background, while leaving the white object unaffected. I think it turned out half-decent, but it's still not in the league of the other posters here.

Photoshop can also help out. I use Jasc paint Shop Pro, which is sort of like a scaled-down version of Photoshop. For my shots, I only use 3 things: a Digital Camera Noise Removal filter (To get rid of some of the terrible graininess of my camera), Hue/Contrast adjustment, and sometimes an Unsharp Mask to clean up the photo a bit.

So, yeah. I guess that's my suggestions for guys who can't afford to run with the big boys. :D

Practice, Practice, Practice.... There are many shots that I take that find the bottom of my recycle bin (aka Permanent delete). As I'm sure the other guys you mentioned (and ones you didn't) can agree with on their own work.. I really try hard to avoid photoshopping my photos.. Most of the time, you can take the same shot straight off the camera that you photoshopped, its just a matter of settings on the camera and the lighting at the time. If I do any photoshopping, it might be some slight contrast or britghness, aswell as minor cropping). 95% of the shots I have posted are straight off the camera.

I've "graduated" up through the different levels of camera's. Started with a Canon P.A.S, then went up to a SLR-like Olympus, and then finally into a full on Canon D-SLR.

Just keep practicing man!!

400 frames!!! I've done less then 50 including the photo meet! That 1 photo/day thing seems like a good idea if I can get off my lazy ass.

I don't think I posted this in here.

What Cameras include the 15 second shutter option? I really like how those turn out, and am interested in buying a camera with that. I know the Canon S320 Elph has it, any others?

Lots of camera do it, but they're the ones with manual controls, sometimes called "pro-sumer" cameras. I think that most Canon Powershots have shutter-priority mode, but you'd be better off talking to someone at a camera store that knows the features of their inventory.

I haven't taken a picture to start it with yet!

For the streaks, I used the only light-emitting device that was in the kitchen - a barbecue lighter!
