Unless you are a professional and going for a senior management position, I would say it's not necessary.

The Federal Government jobs website has some good templates and information for you.

I had mine done it cost me around $200. Worth every penny IMO. Really depends on what kind of job you are looking for.

Had it done by http://www.wordscapes.net

If you are looking for a specific job, in a specific industry i think its a added bonus. Once its done you can kinda add to it yourself, as time goes on.

People that do alot of hiring (HR departments) look at resumes every day. Im sure they appreciate a well put together resume over a template.

I manage the Career Transition division of our operation, which runs extensive programs on resume writing as a component of our corporate program. Some simple resume pointers:

1) List accomplishments NOT duties and responsibilities. Accomplishments demonstrate your ability and performance in a job.

2) Watch out for resume sharks. Many people say they write resumes and change very high fees. I would be cautious about anyone charging over $250 (we charge $200 which includes: career, resume, cover letter, and job search counseling), some of our competitors charge several thousand dollars for the same information.

3) There is no one-resume format, everyone has their preference and the key is that you are pleased with the content and format. Make sure there are no mistakes, a simple spelling error can cost you a job.

4) There are many good resume websites and books that offer excellent information and templates.

5) Your resume is probably the hardest document you will write, don't think you can write it in one sitting, it will take a lot of time and editing.
