Is Titanium that easy to scratch?

moeman: I think that's the coating that's scratched. Titanium is naturally goldish-bronze in color

As Benzo said, Titanium won't scratch so its either something rubbed onto it and hasnt rubbed off or a coating thats scratched.

Nice looking watch tho

That's what I thought, so I was wondeing if it's a coating or if the "made in China" stamp and the scratches perhaps meant it wasn't really Titanium after all. But it could just be the coating scratched off too. Either way, nice watch and a good price, but if it scratches like that I'd be less inclined to buy it. Might still if it's still here in a couple of days though:drool:

for what it's worth, I used to have a titanium omega seamaster, and that thing would scratch more often than a DJ at a rap concert.

I then posted my question about it on an internet watch forum and here is the response I received from a watchmaker:

"Ti can scratch depending upon the grade of the Ti, and what's been done to treat it. Citizen covers some of their Ti watches with a glass type of material that makes it scratch-resistant. IWC I believe puts on some sort of coating, but it's not scratch-free. I don't know if Omega puts anything on their Ti, but the beauty of Ti is that the scratches are only put on the titanium oxide, and not the titanium itself.

Titanium bonds with oxygen to form TiO2 (titanium oxide a.k.a. titania.) This surface layer protects the metal from being scratched, and it also gives it a antimicrobial property. When you do scuff Ti, the marks will eventually "heal" as the surface is reformed. But this takes awhile, and it's not easy to refinish Ti as it is a steel watch."

Contrary to popular belief, Titanium does scratch. It's just harder to scratch than other metals.

You're both confusing strength with hardness. Ti will scratch, relatively easily as well. It's about on par with Platinum. Ti isn't some super metal, it has similar properties to steel at half the weight.

Are they really selling the same watch for $80 at Costco?

If so, this asking price seems too high.

I saw some similar ones, but not this one. They were $79.99 but I'm not sure if they were Ti or not.

They were a NEW model Timex Ti. Slightly different than this one.

Hmmm. Well... I dont think its worth selling for any less than 80$ so whomever is interested in it at that price let me know other wise, i'll just let this thread die out.

Took a look at those watches at Costco today. They are Titanium band only. not Titanium Case.

Still have the watch hehe, price drop again.
