A friend of mine has a 2000 VR6 Jetta and she needs her front right shock replaced because its making some serious sounds. Is there any special tools or things I need to know before I change a strut on a new Jetta? Just like to be prepared if I decide to do it. Thanks

Peace

(Please as always do this "modification" or "repair" at your own risk.)

I believe all that it will require is some time, one special tool, and a few "beers" provided on her part if you are doing the "fix"! ;)

Here goes:

1) First raise the front of the car off the floor, remove the front wheels, then open your hood, remove the strut assembly cap and then loosen and remove the top 22mm bolt, the assembly will drop.

2) This is the stock front suspension assembly you will have to remove the 18mm spindle bolt to loosen the sleeve holding the assembly in place.

3) Remove the 18mm spindle bolt.

4) Once the bolt is removed the sleeve will need to be slightly pried open, there is a special VW tool that can be purchased from http://www.autotech.com it will cost you around $10 and worth getting, this magic tool will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

5) The Passenger side is the most difficult assembly to remove, however thanks to VentoDan's idea of taking apart the spring perch from the top (highlighted) the spring will decompress (be careful) once the spring is decompressed you can twist it off its perch and around the strut until you have enough room to remove the entire assembly. This is an alternative to the popular method of lowering the sub frame, if you plan on installing a front sway bar at the same time then i would skip this and lower the sub frame.

Good luck... this is a somewhat "quick-and-dirty" install procedure. Hope this help! :)

Dang brother, remind me that I owe you a beer when I meet you. Thanks for the photo instructions. Now I think I have to do it because you went to all this trouble to show me. I'll tell you how it goes....

Peace
