The Highlander is not in the same class as the CRV or RAV4 which are compact sport utilities. The Highlander would be a mid-size car based SUV. It is built on the Camry platform using (for 2001) the 3.0 V6 from the Camry. Which is was also used in the Sienna V6, Solara V6, Lexus ES300 and RX300. For 2004 (I believe) the engine was changed to Toyota's 3.3 V6.
Highlander is availanble in FWD 4 cyl, FWD V6, 4WD 4 cyl and 4WD V6. I would recommend going with a 4WD V6. Even just for re-sale value alone. The Highlanders have solid resale value, especially since its smooth and quiet ride is much like that of a sedan.

I would maybe consider looking for a 2002 model if I were you, as 2001 was the introductory year for the Highlander. Consumer Reports gives it a Recommended rating.

This is from memory... and memory does not always serve me correctly :)

Great vehicles, if funds permit I would opt for the 2004 with the 3.3L 230HP..fast grocery go getter
