So my gf is interested in getting something called a shuttle computer and since I have no earthly clue about what they are I figured I'd ask on here.

I think she is primarily wanting something for gaming and downloading that won't cost a whack of cash.

Any information/advice/suggestions you can give me would be welcome.

a shutle pc is an expensive little box that looks pretty.

I say, buy her a cheap memx prebuild and be done w/ it :)

A shuttle computer would probably be more than a similarily equipped pc.

shuttle is bascially a small form factor pc. small case, small motherboard, not a big tower.

check out www.shuttle.com

edit: heh rasmus beat me to it

hey man, what a shuttle pc basically is, is it's a very under-sized pc. A lot of people use them as a PVR(personal video recorder) in thier living rooms, due to the fact they are so small and look really cool. As far as getting something cheaper goes, a shuttle pc is going to be more expensive than a normal tower pc.

edit: ahah you both beat me

But Shuttles are cool!

Yeah, Shuttle system would run you about $600-$700 for the same system as the $369 above.

It's more but it's cool. And remember to buy Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor/Speakers with matching style.

I thought a Turbo mustang guy would be all about the function over form?

You get what you pay for. I love my shuttle and would not trade it for anything else. Plus it's powerful and pimp in a nice little package.

I had one built by Memory Express a few months ago with an Athlon 3500+. Looks just like Ekliptix's above.

Since the case is so small, the CPU fan can't be used. If you want to add a second HD, it'll have to be external HD.

What?
The CPU fan can't be used but it has it's own cooling system which is much better imo.
My shuttle has 5 fans total and room for 3 HDs.
I have 2 HD's in it right now. And the CPU temperature is always at about 33 degrees with a 45 degree system temperature.

I love the concept of the shuttle xpc... but man, if that motherboard goes you're SOL ....

Something like the x-qpack cases + swap out the power supply (the one it comes with... will not last if you have a higher powered machine). Build your system around that :D

i thought it was a sweet machine however even with the special heat sink thermal cooled heat pipes my system was still to hot for my liking usually around 38 degrees which isn't bad for a 3.6 p4 but very limited to what kind of cooling system you can put in. sweet machine overall and excellent media pc

Well, of course the whole underlying concept is to save space hence the SFF. If you're looking for a small, space effective, powerful machine without a lot of modifications then it's a very good buy.
