Uhh... Electric bass preferrably, what do you have? I am new to this whole thing so explain what a full size is vs a non full size.

Fullsize has 24 fret positions, while a Short-scale has only 20.

Most Fender basses are short-scale, Yamahas tend to be fullsize, but it varies. Fullsize basses offer more flexibility, but the chances of having to play the 4 extra frets are pretty low. Since you're a beginner, it really won't matter which you go for. I'd recommend getting a fairly good bass, as low-quality basses actually tend to be harder to play. (In other words, stay away from Squier) Plus, a good bass offers much better resale value in case you decide that bass isn't the thing for you.

Amps can be had for pretty cheap - you'll probably get a small solid-state amp, which is a good place to start until you're ready to dish out more cash for good equipment. (I got a kickass deal on a custom tube amplifier, so I can't really give you advice on solid state amps.)
