Does anyone know who manufactures and packages this oil? I've used the synthetic version for years in my integra, but I no longer do for my weak sauce D16 engine.

Someone told me that it is repackaged Penzoil oil and its actually decent stuff. Can anyone confirm ?

its all gotta pass standards so it must be decent stuff.

Yeah, its gotta pass tests and if you look at the lable it says meets latest API (American Petroleum Institute) classifications of SL. So it's hard to see why not to use it, is the name brand stuff really that much better? I mean to make SL ratings, it has to past a ton of tests, over 100 different tests was it? And these are the latest tests and the tuffest to pass..

Theres tons of info out there if you search oil ratings/ api ratings.. etc

api info here (http://www.advanceautoparts.com/english/youcan/html/ccr/ccr20030901og.html)

And I'm runnin' mobil1 :banghead:

edit, just looked into it, it's over 3 dozen specific tests it has to pass....

lots of reading but half interesting (http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/)

If you're on a budget then I guess you've got no choice. Did a couple oil changes using this oil and it's "ok" for normla driving, but any car nut wouldn't use it.

I've seen an independent oil test, and the Walmart Tech 2000 oil was better than some of the major oil brands.
This test was not sponsered by Walmart but by an oil additive company...BG products I believe.

Did Walmart had an ad back a few years that Tech 2000 is actually a family ran Canadian company?

20w50 is what a lot of VAG owners run, Just change it in the colder months to 5w30.

Every MK2 VW owner I've met runs that, I run it in the Audi, Recommended by a lot of people depending on the car.

Many older Porsche owners run the same but thats due to things such as malfunctioning oil pressure release valves, oil leaks, old rod bearings or anything else oil related in a Porsche ....Fail lol.

Well I run 20W50 as well :P
Once I get the rings right-side-up it will be Mobil 1 0W40 though. IMO you never need thicker than a 40 weight oil unless it's a track-only car, as heavier oils generate more friction, therefore more heat, etc.
There was a neat little study done on it, I wish I could find the results. Essentially the idea is, if your engine is in good shape, there is no good reason to run 20W50 unless the engine is race-only (or very highly tuned), as it will actually be worse than running a 40 weight oil.

Anyhoo, I ran the tech 2000 normal el-cheapo stuff in scooby for 50,000km's... then again, it threw all 4 rod bearings, and had no oil pressure for the last 5000km or so... Maybe I'm not a good walmart ad.

pretty easy calc on that one

heavier oil = more resistance = hp loss

yeah those are basically my reasons for running this oil, although my car isnt a track bruiser, and really is just moderately tuned

thicker oil = HP loss is correct, but what wasn't mentioned were the last 2 words... 'through heat'

Thicker oils bring your oil temps up as well, causing them to thin out a little bit, but it's also a lot harder on the oil, and it will break down faster. So, if you have a moderately tuned car that isn't beat-on all day long, don't run 20W50, because it will cause your oil to deteriorate at a greatly inreased rate. Now of course synthetics can handle this MUCH better than dino oils can, but I really don't want to start that debate as well.

I don't want to be a basher, but before you run 20W50, try a 40 weight oil. Do you have an oil temp gauge? I presume that pic is a turbo glowing in the dark, but it looks pretty purple?... If your oil temps are fine, and your oil pressure is good with a W40 oil, you're going to see a lot less engine wear with it than with a W50, especially a 20W50, because the 20W50 will be tough on startup. BTW, I've never seen Mobil 1 20W50, only 15W50?...

That said, I already mentioned, my 951 will be running 0W40, even on track days. If you adhere to 10,000km change intervals, you will find that it doesn't shear back to much less than a 35 weight oil, which really isn't that bad, and combined with the incredible film strength of Mobil 1, it being a 35 weight oil is just fine.

its probably just his cell camera not picking up the actual color of the glowing...
