I guess this should be in the flames thread however I thought it deserved one of its own.

Any thoughts?

I would probably say Theo Fleury in spite of all of his flaws. There have been quite a few great players though. Hankan Loob, Lanny Mcdonald, Mike Vernon, Reggie Lemmlin, Doug Gilmour, Super Joe, Al Mcinnis (sp), Jarome Iginla, Kent Nillson.

Let me know

Any thoughts?

I agree. Theo Fleury was the heart and soul of our team.

Might not be the best but I really liked Gary Roberts. That guy was hardcore. Early 90's power forward who would just wreck shit up. Too bad those neck injuries slowed him down.

With the exception of Hull and Gilmour, most of the former Flames greats had their best years in Calgary.

Theo, Theo, Theo. i have a game worn, autographed jersey from him. by far the best flame ever in my opinion. one of the greatest hockey players in the last decade, until he turned into a raging alcoholic, lol. but ya, GO FLAMES GO!!!!

Id say Iginla. Hes the heart and soul of the new flames, and hes a perfect face for the league

^:werd:, Iggy has always been here for us, he's had the chance to leave for larger markets many times before and he didn't Conroy-out on us and jump ship. It just seems he cares for the community and the team very much. He's definetly got my vote.

It's gotta be Jarome ,Neil ..:dunno:
hah couldn't say though, maybe Lanny or Fleury though??

mac_82
10-30-2005, 04:06 PM
Fleury or MacInnis at this point. If Iginla continues to play amazing for another 150-200 games or more with the Flames then he may surpass them.

At the end of his career, it'll be Iginla. But definately not right now. I'd have to go with Fleury as well.

JOE MULLEN!!! lol

he was my all time favorite.. because his kids went to the same elementary as me.. and he would come to the school and give out hockey cards with his signature.. or sign our jerseys

then it was Fleury.

I say Fleury. The guy had heart and was always in the thick of things, digging away. Far from a prima-donna player, Theo wasn't afraid to get into the corners and fight for the puck.

I've got an autographed game-used (And I do mean well-used!) Fleury stick from around 1990, it's one of my favorite hockey collectables.

I say Brett Hull and Gary Leeman

p.s. we should've kept hull instead of traded to St.Lou for Rick Wamsley

hahah, but all joke aside. I actually prefer Joel Otto, and Theo

I think Kippers deserves at least an honorable mention

Funny how short people's memories are.

Plett still holds tonnes of Team records. (Most of them when the Flames were in the Patrick Division)

Lanny holds the Teams Goals record.

MacInnis has the teams point record.

Love or hate him, Vernon was toe to toe with Roy for career wins until Detroit let him go.

Looooooooooooooooooooob?

How can you not love Pepper?

How about Gilmour, and his off ice tirade at Micheal Landsberg(I think it was Landsberg anywaysback :dunno: ) during the Sports at 11 era is classic Gilmour, and one of the biggest reasons we loved him.

I was wondering how long that would take. How long have you been watching the Flames lol ;)

Kipper has played what? 50 games for the Flames

What no Loob? :D

Rene Corbet........j/k

I'd have to go With Lanny. I'd pick Fleury if he didn't end his career in the NHL the way he did.

I say Theo Fleury. he was my favorite until he left. 5'6" with mad skills, speed and toughness. he was hands down one of the best. i wish they gave him #14 in the olympics instead of shanahan. :(

mac_82
10-31-2005, 09:34 PM
everything fleury did after he was a flame shouldnt have any bearing at all for what he did for the flames. if he wasnt our best player ever then he was top 3 hands down.

and sure kipper is a great goalie, but thats like saying turek should be the greatest flame for his start to the 01-02 season. vernon played 526 games for the flames. turek played 153. kipper has played 50 games to put things into perspective.

theo had his best years with the flames, so did niewendyk, it has to be one of thoes 2. ya Mcdonald was great but he was going down hill when he came to the flames.

nieuwendyk has my vote i think, he had his super star years as a flame. thats not taking anything away from flury, really just toss a coin cause they were both great.

But it could be argued that we won our only cup in 88-89 because of the efforts of MacInnis more than anyone else.

He finshed the season 5th in points for the team.
G- 16
A- 58
Pts- 74

He was a 2nd team allstar that year.

He had the MOST points in the playoffs with 31.

And he won the Conn Smythe Trophy.

In what can be seen as the Flames best season ever, MacInnis would have to be the best player when it counted that season.

Sure Mullen, Loob, Gilmour, and Nieuwendyk finshed ahead of him in scoring in the regular season that year, and Mullen and Vernon were also allstars that season, but Al stepped up in the playoffs where it counted.

Also here are some team records that MacInnis holds

-most games played (803) 1st
-goals (213) 7th
-points (822) 2nd
-assists (609) 1st
-most seasons (11) 1st tied with Fleury
-most points in one season by a Defenceman (103) 1st 1990-91
-most goals in one season by a Defenceman (28) 1st 89-90 / 90-91 / 93-94
-most assists in one season by a Defenceman (75) 1st 90-91
-consecutive games scoring (9) tied 1st 86-87

This why my vote is for MacInnis. Fleury, Iginla and Nieuwendyk round out the top 4.

2. Lanny "Orange hair caterpillar on my upper-lip" MacDonald
3. Mike Vernon
4. Al Macinnis
5. Jamie Macoun

I'd say for the standout characters it's definitely Lanny and Theo, but then since I'm not a very old school guy I'm gonna go with Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla

Well it's Lanny.

ZorroAMG
11-02-2005, 08:42 AM
Mike Vernon.

I can remember at least 3 saves in the 1989 playoffs that would have been the difference between a stanley cup and runner-up. (Vancouver, game 7 much? lol) Mike Vernon did have his issues but he was an AMAZING goaltender.

:werd:

Flames all time leader in points.

103 points in one season by a Defenceman

Flames record for most points in a game (7)

MacInnis was key to our PP. It's never been the same since he left.

His jersy, and Vernie's should be hanging from the rafters.

Why the Flames haven't retired some jerseys yet is beyond me. MacInnis, Fleury and Vernon should all be retired. With Edmonton retiring Coffey, Fuhr, Gretzky, and Messier in the near future, why have we done nothing?

just cause edmonton is doing something don't mean we should do something just to counter act it..

lanny mcdonald all the way! He's one of the most recognized people around Calgary. One day he'll shave his moustache and no one will recognize him
