Hey Guys,
Just wondering if anyone has been to the Dominican Republic and whether they recomend any places/hotels in particular. BTW hows the nightlife? I'n thinkin of goin there at christmas, any comments are appreciated....

I had a great time there. We were in Punta Cana and didn't really leave the resort that often. However, one night we snuck into a 5-star hotel to party...not recommended. Guys with guns were yelling at us in spanish and it was kinda crazy but thankfully we were meeting a chick who was at that hotel and had a minor in spanish - so she yelled at 'em back and we were good, but never again. Also, we took a taxi into part of the town one day and it was crazy, the taxi driver stopped on the highway and got a machete from another cabbie. We were a bit freaked.
Anyways, I got to see 3 girls dyke out on New Years there - a memory I will never forget!

We went to Porta Plada last year, well thats where we landed, we ended up going to a resort just off the ocean, damn it was nice. nightlife? Not entirely sure, i was normally drunk by the time the sun settled, wouldn't let me go anywhere :D
If your thinking of travelling, DON'T RENT unless your a crazy motherf***er. They don't know how to drive down there and there aren't many traffic rules, and if a white person causes a problem its normally them at fault, not the locals. Take only hotel authorized taxi's ro tour busses, don't pull "taxi's" off the side of the road unless u regonize the company. I will try and get you some good names.
Everythign is overpriced at the resorts and shopping areas. If your taxi ride says 500 pesos, say 250, you will end up around 350 or 400 but don't pay more then you have to because 400 is still a rip off.
Avoid going anywhere alone if your a chick, or if you have a chick with you, NEVER let her out of your sight. We kept my buddies sister inbetween me and him all the time, if she fell back I would have to stay behind even if it ment me missing out on something, they are hot items down there keep them close to you.
I'll try and get you some more info on where we stayed if your interested.

I used to go to puerto plata as a kid and loved it, went back there a few years ago and it is not as nice as I remember and they have had many problems with malaria. I went to Punta Cana last year and loved it . Nicer beaches, cleaner and friendlier in my opinion. Any of the RIU properties are great especially the RIU Palace and the Bahia Principe is only a year old and very very nice. I was going to the Paradisus on the Maya in Mexico but its outa commision for a while so I am heading back to Punta Cana in 3 weeks.......have fun if you go!

We were in Punta Cana at one of the resorts that has 5 hotels. 4 of them were a 4-Star and 1 was a 5-Star. We stayed at the 5-star so we could use all of the amenities of the other hotels. It was quite neat, besides each Hotel's own buffet, they also had a specialized restaurant (Steakhouse, Seafood Grill, Mexican, Italian and something else). There was a Disco on the resort so we never left it. Didn't really look like a place a tourist would really want to venture out into. We had a really great time in the Domican though, it was a great trip! :thumbsup:

I went to puerto plata for a wedding in the spring. It's a really nice place but once you leave your resort it's scetchy as hell. The resort I stayed at was good but I wouldn't recomend it so I'm not gonna bother posting info.
It's funny when I hear people complain about Calgary drivers. When we first got there it was like midnight and we got a taxi to go to the hotel. Those people drive crazy enough during the day, at night you could swear they all have a death wish.
If you can bring a person that speaks spannish with you it would help out alot at places like the airport and shit.

went to Punta Cana last year and stayed at Ocean Bavaro. Very nice 5 star. French people are a bunch of asses. Learn a little french and spanish so you can cuss the frogs, and sweet talk the mama sitas. Te querio? Hola mama sita, como estas. Oh yeah, locals at the hotel are real friendly, only take hotel tour buses... did I mention french people suck?

also went to Superclubs Punta Cana, didnt post earlier cuzi couldnt remmeber the other pace besides puerto plata...but punta cana is the place to go...was there over new years 4 or 5 yrs ago ....club in the hotel was bumpin everynite ..... unlimited alcohol and clubbin , not bad when youre 16 haah

Make sure you check this site out. It has reviews of all kinds of resorts. It's what we used when planning our trip. (we stayed at the Coral Marien Resort - Puerto Plata)
Decide what you're looking for in your trip. I found that our resort was nice, but there wasn't much to do at night. There was a "disco" club type thing, but it was kind of bunk, and cleared out early (by my standards anyway!), and it was the only thing going at night. As for off the resort to find night life, I didn't feel like leaving as it's kind of sketchy at night... there were armed guards in the bush of our resort... and by armed I mean assault rifles! I met a bunch of people from Calgary, and a few girls from Quebec, and we all hung out at night and found ways to pass time... (I should mention that drinks were available 24/7), so 5 am skinny dipping, etc passed the time.
During the day it was really nice (well it rained most of my trip, but when it didn't it was beautiful). The resorts have all kinds of day trips available, but it's usually cheaper to go find the same company offering the trips and book them outside of the resort.
Finally, don't really expect to buy much, or I should say, don't expect things to be cheap just because the country is dirt poor... Although there are some things you can bargain for (cigars, touristy crap, etc).
Also, make sure to try the rum; it's really good... But stay away from the gin; I'm pretty sure it’s just watered down kerosene! And tip the staff a little here and there... they make like $40 US a week, it's retarded. I gave a bartender $20US one night and he kissed my ass for the rest of the trip (the yankees could be lined up 3 deep all around the bar and he would reach over them to give me my drink!).

Yes, tips, thats what they love the most. They don't make alot so when someone gives them one tip per drink for as much as they make in a day, they are very pleased and love you fo the rest fo the trip.

So it sounds like the general consensus w/ most of you guys is not to leave your resort at night.. right? I think i might wanna go somewhere that has a more "party" atmosphere

If you go for christmas, find a hotel with a club inside it, like ours hand..
TONS and TONS of kids aged 18 - 22....
the club in our hotel was packed every night, we new people...
Everyone just gets to know each other...
We had a soccer game in the dominican.. France vs Canada...
Canada won 10 - 8 :D
The french were getting mad :rofl:
I'v been to mexico a couple times, cuba and the dominican is by far the best place...
Before you go down bring atleast 50$ worth of $1 bills, just go to the bank and exchange some cash...
Tip for drinks, and room service...
Also stay away from all the fake cigars, if they are sold in shacks they are fake.. only real place most likely is the gift shop inside your hotel...

Ah yes, those little shacks. Those guys are pushy as hell, and they all want you to come look at there stuff. I'm sure most of the stuff they sell is fake, but I don't know anything about cigars. My friend and I went over and talked the guy down from $50 to $20 on a box. They could have been rat shit rolled in a leaf for all I know, but we thought we did well! :D
As for the night life. I can only say from my experience what it was like. I'm sure you can find resorts with more of a night life. Find something tailored to the younger crowd and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Haha, yah on the real cigars they will not go down in price, its practicly set in stone....
Whats good about the RUI hotels is, its 3 HUGGGE all inclusive hotels in 1...
3 shows a night..
1 casino
like 10000 small bars
1 Club, with a dance floor in the middle of the resort
1 small strip for shopping, and more shops inside and around the beaches..
Tons of activities, you have a choice from any of the 3 hotels to play at...
All you can eat till 2am... for free, booze included :D
1 bar is open till 5am, goood times at that bar.. aha
Just tons of addtractions you will never be bored....

and remember don't drink the tap water................keep it to bottled water, actually mucho cerveca! works great
